Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares has praised U.S. President Joe Biden for demonstrating “great vision” and a “strong sense of state” following his decision not to seek re-election. Albares described this choice as “brave” and “dignified.”
In an interview with RNE, cited by Europa Press, he emphasized the personal nature of Biden’s decision, affirming that it deserves respect. He noted that Biden’s choice reflects what’s best for both his party and the country.
Albares acknowledged that Biden’s presidency has faced significant challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic, the Capitol riot, and the Russian invasion of Ukraine. He also highlighted the importance of the NATO summit held in Madrid in 2022, which took place during a critical time for Euro-Atlantic security. This summit resulted in a strategic concept for the next decade, focusing on threats from the southern flank.
When asked whether there should be an age limit in politics, especially in light of discussions surrounding Biden’s age, Albares stated that anyone can contribute meaningfully as long as they are mentally and physically capable, regardless of their age. He found establishing age limits “absurd” and expressed that individuals should be aware of their own state of well-being and readiness.
Albares also commented on U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris’s intention to run as the Democratic candidate for the 2024 presidential election. He expressed support for women attaining the highest positions of power, including the presidency in the U.S. He reiterated Spain’s commitment to gender equality and expressed comfort with a U.S. leadership that shares similar values, as well as a commitment to combatting climate change and promoting multilateralism.
