On July 22, Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares expressed deep concern about the potential for violence in the Middle East to soon spread to Lebanon. He made these comments during a press conference following a meeting of foreign ministers from the European Union in Brussels.
Albares specifically addressed the dire situation in Gaza, describing it as a humanitarian catastrophe. He emphasized the urgent need for an immediate and stable ceasefire, reiterating his fears that the violence could easily extend to Lebanon, a sentiment shared by other officials, including Josep Borrell, the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs.
The minister highlighted the alarming official death toll in Gaza, which has reportedly approached 40,000 civilians. He asserted that the humanitarian crisis in the region must be addressed without delay.
Additionally, Albares touched upon the upcoming EU-Israel Association Council meeting, which Borrell has requested with Tel Aviv. He stated that the central focus of this meeting should be the situation in Gaza.
Regarding the ongoing war in Ukraine, Albares noted that EU ministers reaffirmed their unwavering support for Kyiv. He condemned Russia’s aggression, describing it as both unjust and illegal. He argued that the conflict should conclude with a just peace—one that honors the principles of the United Nations Charter. He emphasized that basic principles include respect for territorial integrity and national sovereignty, which are vital for global stability and security.
Albares expressed hope that these discussions would prompt reflection among EU leadership, particularly regarding Hungary’s presidency.
