Alberto Gamero and Falcao’s Role at Millonarios: “We Didn’t Bring Him In to Be the Top Scorer in Colombian Football”

Radamel Falcao García is making waves as he returns to the pitch with Millonarios in Bogotá. This past weekend, during the match against Atlético Bucaramanga, Falcao was a starter for the first time under coach Alberto Gamero and played for 75 minutes.

His presence in the starting lineup created a buzz among the fans at El Campín Stadium, who were eager to see him in action right from the outset. Gamero emphasized that Falcao’s arrival is not solely about him becoming the top scorer of the tournament. Instead, the focus is on integrating him into the team and leveraging his experience. He reassured both players and fans regarding their expectations of Falcao.

Gamero stated, “We are not bringing in the Tiger to be the top scorer in Colombian football; we want him to be part of the team. When a player has several goal-scoring opportunities, it’s because they’re a scorer. The strikers must seek out these chances. It’s a good thing to have players like Castro and Giordana who can score goals.”

Falcao has shown his capabilities and fitness levels in training, which has pleased Gamero. Having already played 45 minutes in a prior match against Independiente Medellín, he made a significant impact in the game against Bucaramanga. After the match, Gamero praised the team’s defensive organization and the importance of patience in breaking through Bucaramanga’s strategy.

He remarked, “The team displayed tranquility and patience, which were vital for securing the victory.” Gamero pointed out that Falcao contributed to the tactical setup by drawing the opposing center-backs and also by dropping back to receive the ball, thus facilitating operations for other forwards like Leonardo Castro.

On Falcao’s performance, Gamero expressed satisfaction, noting their halftime conversation. “He knows how to manage his time on the field, and I decided to keep him on until the 75th minute,” he said. Gamero stressed that Falcao should not become fixated on scoring; his role and overall contribution to the team go beyond that. Currently, Falcao is just one goal away from tying Victor Hugo Aristizábal as Colombia’s all-time leading scorer.

Falcao was officially introduced as a new member of Millonarios FC at El Campín Stadium, where over 25,000 fans attended. They cheered as he carried his child and listened to the live performance of “Viva Colombia, viva Falcao” by Alexy Hernández.

The presentation also unveiled other significant signings, including Félix Charrupí and Juan José Ramírez. The stadium resonated with fans enthusiastically voicing their hopes for Millonarios to clinch the championship title.

During a press conference, Falcao shared his excitement about upcoming significant matches against teams like Atlético Nacional, América de Cali, Deportivo Cali, and Santa Fe. He expressed, “Every match will be special since I haven’t played here, and experiencing the atmosphere and passion we Colombians have will be very emotional.”
