After six years of dedicated service in Minor League Baseball, Layla, the beloved dog of the Florida Clearwater Threshers, officially retired in a heartfelt ceremony. This 13-year-old Labrador retriever last appeared on the baseball field during a game against the Fort Myers Mighty Muscles. Adopted by Andrew Davis, Layla became a cherished companion, learning tricks and bringing joy to those around her.
Recently, signs of aging prompted Davis to contemplate Layla’s retirement from the field. Dominic Repper, the Threshers’ entertainment manager, along with the team, decided to honor Layla with a memorable farewell: a final lap around the field on the night of her retirement party, held during the game.
Her last appearance coincided with “Beach Dogs Friday,” a fun event for dog lovers. This particular event marked a special milestone, as it was Layla’s final game. The BayCare Ballpark was buzzing with fans, including Santa Claus and Layla herself, as she ambled through the dugout and positioned herself for her final retrieves. As the crowd chanted her name, Davis encouraged her with a warm, “Come on, girl.”
The emotional highlight came in the fourth inning when a baseball hit by player Bryson Ware soared into right field. The crowd erupted, chanting, “We love you, Layla!” This joyous atmosphere continued throughout the evening.
The celebration wrapped up with a beautifully decorated baseball-shaped cake that read, “Happy Retirement, Layla.” A video showcasing her best moments was projected on a giant screen in the stadium, allowing everyone to reminisce about her time with the team.
Throughout her life, Layla remained by Andrew Davis’s side. During his days at the Webber International University, she often accompanied him in his truck, later joining the university’s sports program, which paved the way for her career with the Threshers. Repper recognized her potential after seeing a viral video of her, and following some training, she became the star of the team for six memorable years.
Over time, Layla grew to be a beloved figure among fans and players alike. More than just a bat retriever, she posed for photos with fans, entertained crowds, and even barked to support her teammates on the mound. Davis reflects on the joy Layla brought into people’s lives, stating that her presence often inspires others to adopt dogs themselves.
Layla also played a vital role in the team’s charity event, Beach Dog Days, where fans could bring their pets to games. The proceeds went to different charities, including the Suncoast Animal League, and her final appearance generated a significant amount for the cause.
Despite moving a little slower now, Davis plans to continue bringing Layla to games, treating the team as an extended family. Her legacy will live on through her younger sister, Lucy, who has been trained as the next bat dog for the Threshers. “Dominic and the Threshers have told us that she’s in the minors and is next in line,” Davis said to FOX Sports. “She’s already made an impression. Everyone knows who Layla’s sister, Lucy, is.”
