BET+ Sundance Feature Acquisition ‘Young Wild Free’ Drops Trailer

BET+ has unveiled the official trailer for its latest acquisition from the Sundance Film Festival, “Young Wild Free,” ahead of its streaming debut on June 27. Directed by Thembi L. Banks, the film stars Sanaa Lathan, Mike Epps, Algee Smith, and Sierra Capri.

The narrative centers on Brandon Huffman, portrayed by Algee Smith, a high school senior grappling with life’s challenges. His world takes a dramatic turn when he is robbed at gunpoint by Cassidy, played by Sierra Capri, the girl of his dreams. This encounter propels Brandon into a whirlwind of excitement and danger.

Brandon’s life is far from easy. He struggles academically, looks after his younger siblings, and has recently lost his job. His solace lies in his art, which offers an escape from his mundane reality. Cassidy, a confident and daring girl, introduces Brandon to a life of thrill and risk. Together, they embark on a perilous journey, reminiscent of the infamous duo Bonnie and Clyde.

Sanaa Lathan plays Janice Huffman, Brandon’s mother, who is battling her own mental health issues while raising three children. Mike Epps portrays Lamont, the father of Janice’s younger children, who has a strained relationship with Brandon.

Lathan expressed her enthusiasm for the role, highlighting the transformative nature of acting. She found the character of Janice to be a reflection of many women’s struggles in America. Lathan also emphasized the importance of supporting young Black directors, particularly women, and praised Banks for her artistic vision.

Banks, in turn, shared her passion for the film, describing it as a story of young love and coming-of-age. She appreciated the blend of imperfection and beauty in Brandon’s family, believing the story to be both relatable and inspiring.

The film’s screenplay is penned by Juel Taylor, known for “Creed II,” and co-writer Tony Rettenmaier. The production team includes Tommy Oliver from Confluential Films, Charles D. King, James Lopez, and Poppy Hanks from MACRO Studios, as well as Baron Davis and Tracy “Twinkie” Byrd from No Label Productions. Byrd also handled the casting for the film. Executive producers include Codie Elaine Oliver, Charlotte Koh, Prince Baggett, Jo Henriquez, Mark R. Wright, Jenna Cavelle, Tony Rettenmeier, Juel Taylor, Thembi L. Banks, and Sanaa Lathan.

The trailer promises a gripping tale of adventure, love, and the complexities of teenage life. “Young Wild Free” is set to captivate audiences with its dynamic characters and compelling storyline.
