Bethenny Frankel criticized for racial commentary about Hamptons

Bethenny Frankel is facing significant backlash for her recent comments about the Hamptons, where she claimed the area is not just populated by wealthy individuals but also by minorities. In a TikTok video, the former Real Housewives of New York star stated, “There are all kinds of people here. There’s a big Latin community here, big. There is an African American community here on the beach. Beautiful houses. I had a house there one summer.”

The video quickly went viral, drawing criticism from various quarters. Ana Navarro, co-host of The View, was among the first to call out Frankel for her remarks. Navarro tweeted, “News flash: White people are not the only ones capable of having money. There are rich Black people and rich ‘Latins.'”

Other social media users echoed Navarro’s sentiments, questioning Frankel’s understanding of wealth and diversity. One user responded, “…because ‘rich’ means ‘white?'” Another added, “Black People have always lived in The Hamptons. And yes, some of them are wealthy. She needs to stop.” Another user questioned, “What happened to people, not based on color, or culture, just human beings!”

Frankel has yet to respond to the backlash, and her representatives did not immediately return requests for comment. This incident is not the first time Frankel’s social media activity has landed her in hot water. She has previously admitted that her TikTok videos could get her “canceled.”

In September 2023, Frankel faced criticism for gifting a store cashier a $70 makeup palette because she assumed the employee couldn’t afford it. When questioned by a fan, Frankel explained, “Bc (because) she is a cashier at TJ Maxx.” This comment was widely condemned as “tone deaf,” with one user commenting, “That’s ignorant – a cashier at TJ Maxx can afford it if they save it. Comes across entitled and rude.”

Carole Radziwill, Frankel’s former friend and fellow Real Housewives of New York cast member, also criticized her actions, accusing her of having a “white savior complex.” Radziwill tweeted, “Who sent this to me? Lol. I mean stop this nonsense. So much to unpack but I’m not getting paid to do this any longer. But here…one ‘word’: #whitesaviorcomplex.”

Frankel’s recent comments about the Hamptons have only added to the controversy surrounding her. One fan wrote, “I guess us Asians and South Asians don’t get to be Hamptons rich. Meanwhile, we are the highest earners in the country, but what do I know?” Another added, “This woman has been showing her white privilege for YEARS. This is nothing new and is just who she is.” Another simply stated, “Bethenny needs to seriously put her phone down for a long time. She needs to stop.”

The backlash comes just weeks after Frankel faced criticism for buying a luxury car to match her dress. Standing in front of a new blue Ford Bronco while wearing a blue maxi dress, she posted on Instagram, “When you buy a car to match your outfit…” This post was met with criticism, with one fan asking, “People can’t even afford groceries right now and you’re posting this?” Another added, “So tone deaf do u really need to show off ur in the Hamptons & got a new car?” A sarcastic commenter wrote, “Wow. That’s so relatable.”

In another controversial TikTok video, Frankel was slammed for giving away “leftover makeup” to TJ Maxx employees. She explained in the video, “The women who work here are so nice and they’re always complimenting me on what we buy… So I wanted to bring them some of the leftover makeup that I just tried, opened up, and put in a giveaway pile.” She insisted that the makeup was “all brand new,” but the employee expressed concern about accepting the makeup, citing company policies against accepting gratuities or gifts.

Social media users were quick to criticize the video, with one writing, “why film her. she looks scared. is this for clout?” Another angry fan posted, “So tone deaf do u really need to show off ur in the Hamptons & got a new car?” Another added, “she’s so out of touch. she really thinks she did something there #entitledpeople…”

Carole Radziwill also weighed in on this incident, reposting the same TikTok video and writing, “Who sent this to me? Lol. I mean stop this nonsense. So much to unpack but I’m not getting paid to do this any longer. But here…one ‘word’: #whitesaviorcomplex.”

Bethenny Frankel’s recent comments about the Hamptons have sparked a significant backlash, with many accusing her of being out of touch and displaying white privilege. As the criticism continues to mount, Frankel has yet to address the controversy publicly.
