Bob Newhart wanted Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson to portray him in a biographical movie.

Bob Newhart once expressed a desire for Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson to portray him in a biographical film. The beloved comedian and actor, who passed away at the age of 94 on Thursday, discussed this in one of his final interviews while appearing on Conan O’Brien’s show in 2021. He humorously suggested that the 52-year-old wrestler-turned-actor would be the perfect choice to depict his life.

During the conversation, the 61-year-old O’Brien asked Newhart who he would like to see play him in a cinematic version of his impressive 70-year career. Bob jokingly replied, “I think The Rock. People often confuse me with him. They say, ‘Hey, Dwayne,’ and I respond, ‘No, no, I’m not Dwayne! But there should be a good fight over that.'” When O’Brien remarked that The Rock would do a fantastic job of portraying his “early football days,” Newhart added, “I hear that Brad Pitt is very interested.”

In another interview a year prior to his conversation with O’Brien, Bob shared his thoughts on life and career. He stated, “I have this theory that when it’s all over, and you ascend — I’ve been led to believe — to heaven, and there’s a God who asks you, ‘What have you done?’ I’d answer, ‘I made people laugh.’ (He) would say, ‘Yes, go stand in that short line over there.’ Comedy has given me a wonderful life. When I started doing stand-up, I just remember the sound of laughter. It’s one of the great sounds in the world.”

Bob’s passing came just months after the death of his wife Ginnie, whom he married in 1963. He is survived by their four children and ten grandchildren.

Newhart received his first Primetime Emmy nomination in 1962 for his variety show, ‘The Bob Newhart Show.’ Additionally, he found a new generation of fans through his role as Professor Proton on the hit series ‘The Big Bang Theory.’ In one of his last email interviews with CNN in 2023, he declared that his role in ‘Elf’ was his favorite throughout his seven-decade career. He enthusiastically mentioned, “Without a doubt, the role of Buddy the Elf far exceeds any other role I’ve played. My agent sent me the script, and I fell in love with it.”

Before embarking on his successful entertainment career, Bob served in the United States Army during the Korean War as a personnel officer. He was discharged in 1954 and subsequently found work as an accountant and advertising copywriter.
