The owners of the Chicago Bulls in the NBA and the Chicago Blackhawks in the NHL unveiled a $7 billion plan on Tuesday to transform the parking lots surrounding the United Center. This ambitious project aims to create green spaces and various levels of housing, as well as a concert hall and other facilities.
Known as the 1901 Project, this initiative is regarded as the largest private investment in the western part of Chicago. The project is spearheaded by the Reinsdorf and Wirtz families, who own the arena. It will unfold in multiple phases over the next decade on more than 22 acres of privately owned land.
If the city approves, construction is slated to begin in the second quarter of 2025. Michael Reinsdorf, president of the Bulls, expressed that the 1901 Project signifies their families’ ongoing commitment to the future of Chicago’s West Side. He noted, "This investment will create a thriving, interconnected neighborhood, bringing significant benefits and resources to the community we have called home for years."
The initial phase includes a 6,000-seat theater, a multi-level parking facility, and more than 10 acres of public green space on the roof. Additionally, the plan features more pedestrian-friendly sidewalks, bike lanes, and spaces for hotels and retail outlets.
Future phases are expected to introduce housing that offers a mix of unit sizes, including affordable options, unsubsidized properties, and upscale residences, alongside transportation improvements.
"This is just the beginning," said Danny Wirtz, president of the Blackhawks. He emphasized the importance of engaging with neighboring communities and partners to identify opportunities for collective wealth generation stemming from this private investment. "We have a unique opportunity to expand a legacy that all of Chicago can take pride in."
