Marvel Studios’ upcoming film, Captain America: Brave New World, has recently received a concerning production update that has left fans worried about the film’s quality. The movie, set to be released on February 14, 2025, is the first of four MCU films scheduled for 2025. However, the latest news from the production front has raised doubts about whether the film will meet the high standards set by previous MCU entries.
On May 29, Marvel Studios began reshoots for Captain America: Brave New World. This update was confirmed by Atlanta Filming on Instagram, which posted vague pictures from the set with the caption, “Here is Cap4. Day 1… of many.” The account also clarified that this was the “first day of the first set of reshoots,” indicating that more reshoots might follow. The Hollywood Reporter later revealed that these reshoots would span a substantial 22 days.
In December 2023, Deadline reported that Marvel planned to rewrite and reshoot significant portions of the movie. Writer Matthew Orton was brought in to rework the script before the reshoots began. While the exact duration of these reshoots remains unclear, the second comment from Atlanta Filming suggested that another round of shooting might follow this stint.
Captain America: Brave New World has faced numerous challenges during its production. One of the issues was the inclusion of the controversial comic character Sabra in the cast. Additionally, fans are expecting a new set of villains, even though initial set videos showed different actors and characters. Despite these changes, Tim Blake Nelson’s Leader, a character from The Incredible Hulk, remains part of the film.
Early footage from the film has received positive reactions, with many praising the action and thriller elements. However, with at least one round of reshoots still to come, the final quality of the film remains uncertain. Fans are hopeful that the sequel will live up to their expectations.
Captain America: Brave New World is directed by Julius Onah and written by Malcolm Spellman, Dalan Musson, and Matthew Orton. The film stars Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson / Captain America, alongside Danny Ramirez, Carl Lumbly, Tim Blake Nelson, Shira Haas, Harrison Ford, and Liv Tyler. The movie is a continuation of the television miniseries The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and the fourth installment in the Captain America film series.
Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson, who became the new Captain America in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, will be stepping up as the leader in this film. Mackie has described his portrayal of Captain America as more humane and less judgmental, with a different understanding of what it means to be a good or bad guy.
Danny Ramirez will reprise his role as Joaquin Torres, who takes on Wilson’s former mantle of Falcon. Carl Lumbly returns as Isaiah Bradley, an African-American Korean War veteran and super soldier. Tim Blake Nelson’s Samuel Sterns / Leader, a character with superhuman intelligence, will be one of the film’s villains.
Shira Haas will play Ruth / Sabra, a character whose inclusion has sparked controversy due to her portrayal in the comics. Harrison Ford joins the cast as Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, the newly-elected president of the United States, replacing the late William Hurt. Liv Tyler returns as Betty Ross, a cellular biologist and Thaddeus’s daughter.
Additional cast members include Xosha Roquemore, Seth Rollins, Rosa Salazar, and Giancarlo Esposito in undisclosed roles. The film’s production has faced several challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic and the 2023 Writers Guild of America strike. Despite these hurdles, Marvel Studios is pushing forward with the project.
Fans are eagerly awaiting the release of Captain America: Brave New World, hoping that the reshoots and script rewrites will result in a film that lives up to the high standards of the MCU. With its release date set for February 14, 2025, the film is part of Phase Five of the MCU and promises to bring new themes and antagonists to the universe.
