Spanish badminton player Carolina Marín is set to make her debut at the Paris Olympics this Sunday at 19:30, facing Swiss opponent Jenjira Stadelmann. This information was confirmed by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on its website.
Marín, who won the gold medal at the Rio 2016 Olympics, missed the Tokyo 2020 Games due to a severe knee injury. After her match against Stadelmann, she is scheduled to compete next against Ireland’s Racheal Darragh, although the date for that matchup has yet to be announced. This will be her final group stage match prior to the knockout rounds.
The athlete from Huelva was among the contenders to be the flagbearer for her country but expressed concerns about competing the day after the opening ceremony. “If I were to compete the morning after, it would be very complicated, so I need to consider all the circumstances and discuss it with my team,” she mentioned back in May.
Ultimately, the honor of carrying the flag went to sailor Támara Echegoyen, who will share this distinction with canoeist Marcus Cooper. Marín’s Olympic journey will officially begin two days following the ceremony.
