Casey Affleck has expressed regret over his disrespectful behavior during an awards season. The 48-year-old actor received multiple nominations for his role in the 2007 film “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford,” including accolades from the Oscars, Golden Globes, and the Screen Actors Guild. Upon reflection, he wishes he had taken the experience more seriously.
In a recent episode of the podcast “It Happened in Hollywood” by The Hollywood Reporter, Casey shared an incident where he was chewing gum at an awards ceremony. He recalled the backlash, saying, “People were asking, ‘Who does he think he is, chewing gum on camera at the SAG Awards?’ I wasn’t taking it seriously enough back then. Now I realize I could have been more respectful because it truly means something. Being recognized by your peers—a group of hardworking, talented individuals—is significant.”
He reflected on how the awards represent the industry’s celebratory moments, similar to a Christmas party for their community. Casey acknowledged that he could have approached it with more reverence, rather than chewing gum or treating it lightly.
At the time, his behavior was influenced by personal circumstances, including the arrival of his new baby, Atticus, who was born in January 2008. Casey, who also has a 20-year-old daughter, Indiana, with his ex-wife Summer Phoenix, mentioned that he was reluctant to dress up and participate in a televised event. The stress of being away from his newborn overshadowed the pleasure of attending the awards.
Later, Casey won an Oscar and a Golden Globe for his performance in “Manchester by the Sea” (2016). He remarked, “Any cynicism I had melted away quickly when I stood there, looking at the faces of people I had admired for so long—people whose work I had followed since I was young.”
This experience has certainly given him a new perspective on the importance of such events and the appreciation for recognition within the film industry.
