Chet Hanks is opening up about his battle with drug addiction. The son of Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson recently shared his experiences on Bradley Martyn’s Raw Talk podcast, revealing the extent of his struggle with cocaine. “The drug I had the most problem with was just f–king coke, dude,” the 33-year-old admitted. “I’m a f–king cokehead, straight-up.”
Although Chet no longer uses cocaine, he recounted a time when he identified with Al Pacino’s character Tony Montana from the 1983 film Scarface, a notorious drug lord known for his excessive cocaine use. “I would go do coke with the cokeheads,” he said, “and they would be telling me, like, ‘Yo, chill, bro. Wait a second. Give it like 15 minutes.'” He added, “I couldn’t get enough of that.”
Chet’s addiction became apparent to his parents when he was 17, prompting them to stage an intervention. “I wake up in the morning,” he recalled, “it’s 4 o’clock in the morning and there’s two huge f–king dudes standing at the foot of my bed, looking at me. And they go, ‘You’re coming with us.'”
Despite the abrupt intervention, Chet holds no ill will towards his parents. “It’s nothing against them, man,” he explained. Today, he is proud to have left his cocaine days behind. “It’s terrible,” he said of the drug. “It eats away [at you]. You just, like, wither away ’cause you can’t eat, you can’t sleep.”
Chet’s story is one of many in Hollywood where celebrities have opened up about their struggles with addiction and their journeys to sobriety. Tom Holland, for instance, stopped drinking alcohol in 2022 after feeling “enslaved” to it. “I was definitely addicted to alcohol, not shying away from that at all,” Holland shared on the On Purpose with Jay Shetty podcast. He noticed significant improvements in his life after quitting, including better sleep and mental clarity.
Alec Baldwin, who has been sober for nearly four decades, also shared his experience. “I don’t discuss this a lot,” he said during a podcast appearance. “I’m 39 years sober. I got sober Feb. 23, 1985.” Baldwin recounted his heavy cocaine use in the early ’80s and how quitting the drug led him to also give up alcohol.
Anne Hathaway, who has been sober for over five years, shared her decision to quit drinking with the New York Times. “I knew deep down it wasn’t for me,” she said. “And it just felt so extreme to have to say, ‘But none?’ But none. If you’re allergic to something or have an anaphylactic reaction to something, you don’t argue with it. So I stopped arguing with it.”
Liam Payne, formerly of One Direction, celebrated being 100 days sober in May 2023. He revealed that his battle with alcohol began during the height of the band’s fame. “The problem we had in the band—and I don’t blame anybody for this…But it feels to me like, when we were in the band, the best way to secure us, because of how big it got, was to just lock us in a room. And, of course, what is in the room? A minibar,” Payne shared.
Demi Moore spoke about her “self-destructive path” that nearly derailed her career while accepting the 2018 Woman of the Year Award by the Peggy Albrecht Friendly House. “I feel like there’s a defining moments in our lives that shape who we are and the direction we go and early in my career, I was spiraling down a path of real self-destruction,” she recalled.
Matthew Perry, the late Friends star, revealed in 2022 that he had spent about $9 million trying to get sober after getting hooked on alcohol and drugs at a young age. His addiction struggles began at age 14, and he described the exhausting process of maintaining his drug habit.
Noah Cyrus shared in 2022 that she’s been in recovery for her Xanax addiction since 2020. “It gave me so much structure in the time that I really needed structure,” she told Rolling Stone. “It gave me hope.”
Dax Shepard, who was sober for 16 years before relapsing in 2020, opened up about his struggle on his Armchair Expert podcast. “For the last eight weeks maybe, I don’t really know…I’m on them all day,” he said, referring to Vicodin. “And I’m allowed to be on them at some dosage because I have a prescription and then I’m also augmenting that.”
Jamie Lee Curtis got candid about her 10-year addiction to opiates, which began in the late ’80s after a minor plastic surgery. “I had a 10-year run, stealing, conniving,” she told People. “No one knew. No one.”
Drew Barrymore, who previously went to rehab for alcohol and drug addiction, shared in 2021 that she was marking a big milestone in her journey. “I have not had a drink of alcohol in two and a half years,” she said on CBS Mornings.
Bradley Cooper struggled with a cocaine addiction during the early 2000s before friend Will Arnett confronted him about his behavior. “That was the first time I ever realized I had a problem with drugs and alcohol,” Cooper recalled during a 2022 appearance on the Smartless podcast.
Brad Pitt also credited Cooper for helping him get sober. “I got sober because of this guy,” he told the audience at the 2020 National Board of Review Annual Awards after Cooper presented him with a trophy.
These stories highlight the pervasive issue of addiction and the importance of seeking help. Chet Hanks’ candidness about his struggle and the advice he received from fellow addicts to “relax” serves as a reminder that recovery is a personal journey, often requiring support and intervention from loved ones.
