On July 16, four brave members of Civil Protection risked their lives to save a man who was attempting to jump off a bridge. Their heroic actions earned them the “Soy de León” recognition.
The municipal president, Ale Gutiérrez, expressed her gratitude and admiration for Juan Carlos Sánchez Rentería, Juan Pablo Ponce Ramírez, Christian Adolfo Murillo Romero, and Luis Joel Hernández Hernández, acknowledging their courage and dedication to the community.
She stated, “I will never tire of saying that the best we have in Public Security is our colleagues who give their lives to protect this city. Today, I want to give a very special thanks to the four of you for your work. Those of us who saw the video of how you acted have no doubt that you went above and beyond to save the person who wanted to take his own life. You arrived quickly, took the necessary actions, and ensured he is alive today.”
The rescue occurred on the bridge at the intersection of Malecón del Río de los Gómez and Mariano Escobedo. The Civil Protection team acted promptly and in a coordinated manner to ensure the safety of the individual. Besides demonstrating their physical and technical skills, they also showed their humanity by engaging in dialogue with the distressed person, providing emotional support, and facilitating access to psychological care.
Receiving the recognition, Juan Carlos Sánchez Rentería expressed his gratitude to the authorities, sharing his emotions during the rescue. He remarked, “I felt a lot of fear because I also have a family, my wife, and my little girl. But that very fear motivated me to undertake the rescue because we are all human, we have families, and we wouldn’t want a tragedy like that to happen.”
During the Flag Honors ceremony, the mayor also thanked all the organizations that voluntarily joined the efforts to adopt homeless dogs, helping them find new families.
