Classic rock legends are powerless over Rock Hall of Fame induction

Tommy Shaw of Styx recently expressed his band’s frustration over their lack of induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Despite their impressive career, Shaw admits they have no control over the process. “We’re really powerless over it,” he told Billboard. “We don’t have any influence whatsoever. So to be anticipating it or be disappointed that we’re not in there… I don’t even know who the people are who judge (the Rock Hall), so I can’t really say much about it.”

Each year, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s nominating committee selects acts for the annual ballot. Over 1,000 historians, musicians, and industry members then cast their votes. Styx’s credentials are undeniable. The band has sold over 54 million albums, including five consecutive multi-platinum releases in the ’70s and early ’80s. Despite being eligible since 1998, they have never received a nomination.

Shaw remains philosophical about their chances. “If that thing’s meant to happen, it will,” he said. “We just know that our fans love us and we know that our music is good before we let them hear it.”

Styx will be touring this summer with Foreigner, who will be inducted into the Hall of Fame this year after years of being overlooked. Shaw is thrilled for his tourmates. “It’s fantastic,” he said. “You like to see your friends get in. [Peter] Frampton this year, too.”

The Renegades & Juke Box Heroes tour kicks off June 11 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and runs through September.

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame has long been a subject of debate among musicians and fans alike. Many artists have voiced their opinions on the induction process. The list of those who have criticized the Hall is extensive, including some of the biggest names in rock.

For Shaw and Styx, the focus remains on their music and their fans. “We just know that our fans love us and we know that our music is good before we let them hear it,” Shaw reiterated.

As the debate over the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame continues, one thing is clear: classic rock legends like Styx remain powerless over their induction. Despite their significant contributions to the genre, the decision lies in the hands of the nominating committee and the voters.

For now, Styx will continue to do what they do best: make music and perform for their fans. And who knows? Maybe one day, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame will recognize their achievements. Until then, Shaw and his bandmates will keep rocking on.
