Climate Activists Stick to Runway at Cologne-Bonn Airport, Halting Flights

In a dramatic demonstration, climate activists glued themselves to the runway of Cologne-Bonn Airport in western Germany on Wednesday, leading to flight cancellations for several hours, according to authorities.

The police reported that five individuals adhered themselves to the airport’s taxiway early in the morning, as noted by the German news agency dpa. Flights were suspended around 5:45 AM, and after the protestors were removed, operations resumed shortly after 9 AM.

The group calling itself Last Generation issued a statement revealing that the activists, organized in small clusters, cut through the perimeter fence, approached the airport, and attached themselves to the tarmac using a mixture of sand and glue.

Their demands are significant: they urge the German government to negotiate and sign an international agreement aimed at phasing out the use of oil, gas, and coal globally by 2030.

This incident marks the latest in a string of protests by climate activists at various airports, which have disrupted air traffic in recent years.

In response, just last week, the German government passed a law allowing for stricter penalties, including prison sentences, for those who unlawfully enter airport perimeters.
