Meghan Markle’s potential return to the “Suits” franchise has been a hot topic recently, especially with rumors of a spin-off in the works. Wendell Pierce, who starred alongside Markle in the legal drama from 2011 to 2017, has hinted at her interest in coming back to the series.
In a conversation with People, Pierce shared insights into Markle’s life post-“Suits” and her genuine relationship with Prince Harry. He recounted a recent encounter with the Duchess of Sussex in New York City, where she received an award. “When Meghan came into town, she got an award last year. I had a chance to say hello and wish her and Prince Harry well,” Pierce said. He added, “They look very much in love and were very happy, so that’s the most important thing.”
Pierce, who played Markle’s father on the show, reminisced about their time working together. “I’ve gotten to see her just a few times since, and we’ve been able to reminisce. We have fond memories of working together,” he noted.
Markle’s departure from “Suits” coincided with her high-profile relationship with Prince Harry, leading to the show’s end after seven seasons. However, rumors about her return to television have been fueled by reports of financial struggles since the couple left the royal family in 2020.
Patrick J. Adams, who played Markle’s love interest on the show, also teased the possibility of their return during this year’s Golden Globes. Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, Adams said, “Sure. Mike and Rachel in Seattle. They gotta come down to LA. They gotta fix some stuff.” He added, “If we got the phone call, if I got the phone call, I’m ready to suit up again. I love the show, I love the character. And I loved working with all these people.”
For the past four months, “Suits” has been breaking streaming viewership records, making it one of the hottest series on television. The franchise, which concluded in September 2019, is now plotting a comeback.
Series creator Aaron Korsh is reportedly developing a new “Suits” offshoot for NBCUniversal. While deals are still being negotiated, sources indicate that the project is expected to be fast-tracked with a serious commitment. Unlike the 2019 spin-off “Pearson,” this new series will feature new characters in a new location, possibly Los Angeles.
The original “Suits” and its spin-off “Pearson” both aired on USA Network and were produced by UCP, part of Universal Studio Group. Korsh is expected to executive produce the new offshoot alongside David Bartis and Doug Liman, who were EPs on the original series.
“Suits” centers on famous litigator Harvey Specter, played by Gabriel Macht, who hires university expellee Mike Ross, portrayed by Patrick J. Adams, due to his photographic memory and skills. The series, which also starred Rick Hoffman, Meghan Markle, Sarah Rafferty, and Gina Torres, was popular during its nine-season run.
The show transitioned to streaming and was available on Prime Video and Peacock until Netflix acquired the first eight seasons this year. The series’ resurgence in popularity has been attributed to curiosity about Markle’s final role before becoming a British royal and its engaging storytelling.
Even “Suits” creator Aaron Korsh seems surprised by the show’s renewed success. “I always thought we were underestimated, but it turns out, even I underestimated #Suits,” he tweeted in response to the latest streaming record broken by the show. “It’s good to be the King.”
Gina Torres, another “Suits” alum, was recently asked about the possibility of a reunion and Markle’s involvement. “Yeah, keep waiting for that,” Torres said during an interview for the Variety and iHeart podcast “The Big Ticket.” She added, “I can honestly say, of all the people that have come in and out of my life, I worry about her the least.”
As the buzz around a “Suits” spin-off continues to grow, fans are eagerly waiting to see if Meghan Markle will indeed make a return to her acting roots. With co-stars dropping hints and the franchise’s renewed popularity, the possibility seems more real than ever.
