Danny Trejo believes that his good fortune stems from helping others. The former delinquent and addict turned his life around after finding God and achieving sobriety in 1968. Recently, he shared how his driver, Mario, saved the life of his son, Gilbert, nearly 15 years after Danny aided Mario on his path to recovery.
In an exclusive interview with BANG Showbiz, Danny recounted Mario’s struggles with liver issues that led to a necessary transplant. "Mario was doing well, but then he faced serious liver problems and required a transplant," he explained. "He went to the hospital for the procedure, but he literally lost everything. I would call him, saying, ‘Mario, if you’re up there [in heaven], speak well of me, but if you’re down there [in hell], don’t let them know you know me.’ I was on speakerphone, and I could hear the nurses laughing. After he recovered, I invited him to live with me since he couldn’t work. He improved and became a drug addiction counselor. I hired him as my driver, and that was 25 years ago."
Danny continued, "Nine years ago, when my son fell into drug addiction and was on the brink of death, Mario saved his life. He kicked down the door of a crack house, pulled my son out, and warned two bodyguards, ‘I’m going to kill you.’ Today, my son is a film director and has been sober for almost a decade. God will repay you for your good deeds, but you never know when that will be. Everything good that has happened to me is a direct result of helping someone else."
As he continues his journey of giving back, Danny recently launched the first location of his taco restaurant, Trejo’s Tacos, in London. He shared that he has adjusted the menu to cater to autistic children’s needs. "I work with autistic kids, and we were informed that gluten doesn’t sit well with them. So, we’ve added gluten-free options to our menu. If you visit the restaurant around four or five in the afternoon, you’ll notice families with special needs children, allowing moms to avoid preparing three separate meals. We’ve also removed many unhealthy items, so our food is quite healthy."
