In a recent video, David Ellefson and Jeff Young, both former members of Megadeth and now part of Kings Of Thrash, joined Metal Mastication’s host Brett Hoag in the kitchen to whip up a classic Minnesotan dish, the Tater Tot Hot Dish. This culinary adventure, dubbed “Metal Mastication,” saw the duo reminiscing about their early days in metal, discussing their gear, and sharing stories behind iconic album names like “So Far, So Good, So What.”
The recipe, affectionately named Cousin Sheila’s Tater “Thrash” Hot Dish, calls for simple ingredients: ground beef, a medium yellow onion, garlic powder, onion powder, Worcestershire sauce, black pepper, frozen mixed veggies, Cream of Mushroom soup, and frozen tater tots. The preparation involves browning the beef and onions, mixing in the spices and soup, adding the veggies, and topping it all with tater tots before baking to a golden brown.
Ellefson and Young’s kitchen session wasn’t just about cooking; it was a nostalgic trip down memory lane. They shared insights into their journey into metal, the evolution of their sound, and the significance of their gear. The conversation also touched on the origins of the album name “So Far, So Good, So What,” providing fans with a rare glimpse into the creative process behind one of thrash metal’s seminal works.
Kings Of Thrash, featuring Ellefson and Young, recently announced their “Anarchy In The UK” tour, set to kick off on October 24 and run through November 2. The tour will also feature drummer Fred Aching and vocalist/guitarist Chaz Leon. This tour marks a significant milestone as it coincides with the 30th anniversary of the album “Youthanasia,” a pivotal release in Ellefson’s career.
Ellefson expressed his excitement about the tour, highlighting the UK’s importance in the history of heavy metal. “We are super thrilled to finally bring Kings Of Thrash to the UK, in many ways the origins of heavy metal,” he said. “Even more so, celebrating some highlights of the 30th anniversary of the ‘Youthanasia’ album. The UK has been such a fantastic supporter for more than 40 years of our music, so it’ll be great to bring to our fans rare tracks and highlights of some of the most monumental albums in thrash metal history.”
Jeff Young echoed Ellefson’s sentiments, expressing his eagerness to return to the UK. “I can’t wait to get back to the UK! The last time I played there was with Megadeth in 1988 at Castle Donington for the ‘Monsters of Rock’ festival, so this return trip is long overdue!”
The tour will not only celebrate the “Youthanasia” anniversary but also feature select tracks from other iconic albums like “Killing Is My Business…And Business Is Good,” “So Far…So Good…So What!,” and “Peace Sells…But Who’s Buying?” This promises an unforgettable experience for both longtime fans and newcomers.
