Kevin Feige, the head of Marvel, has described the upcoming movie featuring Deadpool and Wolverine as “the healthiest R-rated film anyone will ever see.” In this movie, Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman reprise their roles as superheroes and join the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While the film contains plenty of foul language and some bloody violence, Feige emphasizes that at its core, it’s a “celebration of friendship and family.”
In an interview with Deadline, Feige explained, “It’s interesting that this is our first R-rated film, but it’s actually the third Deadpool installment. We wanted to stay true to what Ryan has built in those previous films, and we weren’t going to undo that. Hugh and Ryan have talked about this, and I think audiences are picking up on it from the trailer and the press tour so far. Yes, it’s an adult film, and yes, there’s some language and blood, but it’s incredibly emotional. I keep calling it the healthiest R-rated movie anyone could watch.”
He continued by adding that the movie truly celebrates friendship and founded family. While he doesn’t want to overstate things, Feige feels that despite the adult themes that often get attention, viewers will realize just how sincere the film is once they see it. “In my opinion, it’s much more heartfelt than the first two Deadpool films. That’s what excites me the most; once people get past the foul language and the rating, they’ll see how tender it is.”
Feige was also asked about the recent decline in cinema attendance, using “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” as a recent example of the industry struggling after its box office failure. He expressed hope that their upcoming film would help revive the blockbuster experience, reminding audiences that Marvel can deliver top-notch entertainment.
He stated, “I believe the experience we will provide, and I hope will encourage people to watch it again and again, is our responsibility. That is our role at Marvel and as a century-old Hollywood industry: to remind people that we have the best storytellers and can offer the greatest entertainment in the world. As long as we keep pushing the envelope in ways that engage, excite, and captivate the audience’s imagination and psyche, that’s all we’ve ever wanted to do, and all we strive to achieve. I think we must continue evolving and expanding how we do that.”
