Ryan Reynolds’ portrayal of Wade Wilson, better known as Deadpool, has always been characterized by his sharp wit and irreverent humor. In the latest installment, “Deadpool & Wolverine,” the film pushes the boundaries of comedy within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, featuring a plethora of outrageous jokes and references.
The film, which debuted on July 26, showcases a range of comedic elements, including jabs at Hugh Jackman’s personal life, nods to Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, and a variety of risqué topics. As expected, Deadpool’s signature humor is front and center, making it clear why he is dubbed the “Merc With a Mouth.”
Director Shawn Levy, who also took on writing and producing roles, revealed that the creative team had significant freedom to explore the film’s raunchy humor. However, he noted that there was one particular joke that had to be altered. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Levy explained the reasoning behind the change, emphasizing the importance of not “punching down” in comedy.
Levy stated, “The general rule is to never punch down and to only take the piss out of people who can take it.” He mentioned that Jackman was always a good sport about the meta-humor directed at him, often laughing heartily at the jokes. Despite the creative liberties taken, there was one line that the studio requested to be changed. Levy and Reynolds have made a pact to keep the original line a secret, but he did share that it was replaced with another audacious line involving Pinocchio and Deadpool.
This replacement line exemplifies Reynolds’ bold comedic style, showcasing his willingness to push boundaries even when faced with the need for edits. Levy remarked, “That’s Ryan Reynolds for you, audacious to the very edge.”
“Deadpool & Wolverine” follows Wade as he is recruited by Mr. Paradox, played by Matthew Macfadyen, an agent from the Time Variance Authority. The plot revolves around Wade’s quest to save his dying reality by teaming up with an alternate version of Wolverine, portrayed by Jackman. Their journey takes them through various dimensions, filled with cameos and references to past Marvel and X-Men films.
Levy expressed gratitude for the creative autonomy granted by Disney and Feige, noting that it allowed the team to maintain the unique flavor of Deadpool’s humor within the typically family-friendly Marvel framework. He reflected on his initial apprehension about working within the Marvel system, but ultimately found the experience liberating.
The film has been described as a chaotic blend of humor and action, with a plot that takes a backseat to the comedic antics of its characters. Critics have noted that while the film is entertaining, it can also feel overwhelming at times, with a barrage of jokes and references that may not resonate with all viewers.
Despite its chaotic nature, “Deadpool & Wolverine” delivers what fans of the franchise have come to expect: a mix of action, humor, and plenty of Easter eggs. The chemistry between Reynolds and Jackman is palpable, adding to the film’s appeal.
As the summer blockbuster season continues, “Deadpool & Wolverine” stands out as a film that embraces its outrageousness, delivering a unique experience for Marvel fans. With its blend of humor and action, it promises to be a memorable addition to the superhero genre.
