If you frequently find yourself diving into the latest beauty trends on TikTok, you’ve probably encountered the siren eye hacks for hooded eyelids, mermaidcore nail inspirations, and the popular dermaplaning videos. Dermaplaning involves using a thin plastic razor to remove facial hair, peach fuzz, and dead skin while exfoliating. Initially, I thought this cosmetic process seemed intense and risky for my sensitive skin. However, after watching numerous creators effortlessly glide their tools across their faces and apply makeup that supposedly lasted longer, I decided to give it a try.
Using facial oil, stretching the skin while shaving, and other tips from these videos, I found my foundation and blush felt much smoother afterward. My makeup stayed on all day without looking cakey or patchy. Here’s a breakdown of the tools used, tips utilized, and makeup results, along with suggestions from a dermatologist/skincare expert.
After deciding to dermaplane, I headed to my local Marshall’s and picked up a razor set and a hydrating face serum with rose oil, collagen, and hyaluronic acid, both priced individually at $5.99. As seen in practically every dermaplaning-related TikTok video, the first step is to clip back all hair away from your face to focus on the area you want to shave. I centered this test around my sideburn/cheek area, moving all other hair away for a more precise shave.
The next step is to cleanse your face to remove all potential dirt, sweat, oil, and makeup. Board-certified dermatologist Dr. Angela Casey, MD, emphasizes the importance of washing your face with a “pH-balanced, gentle cleanser using lukewarm water.” After cleansing, I followed many creators who used a face serum instead of shaving cream or soap, allowing the razor to glide smoothly along my face, preventing nicks.
As for a serum or oil choice, Casey recommends one with antioxidants, as this ingredient serves as an “extra layer of protection on your skin.” I chose one with soothing additions like hyaluronic acid, which Casey says is “important in keeping your skin hydrated,” especially when removing dead skin while dermaplaning.
Before taking any blade to my face, I carefully stretched the desired area’s skin back with my fingers, as the other hand held the razor. This, as many TikTokers stress, is another crucial step to prevent nicking as a dermaplaning novice. While shaving, I moved the razor in a downward motion at a 45-degree angle, as instructed by BeautyTok creators. I also made it a point to avoid any acne marks, pimples, or wounds to prevent infection.
After shaving any particular area, to avoid clogging the razor and having excess clumped hair stick to your skin, I learned it’s helpful to use a cotton pad or wipe to collect the hairs and dispose of them. After cleaning all oil and hair from the blade, it continued to move smoothly along my skin, preventing infection and cuts.
After successfully removing unwanted hair and dead skin from my face through dermaplaning, I cleansed my face again with a gentle cleanser to avoid causing redness or a negative reaction. I let my skin breathe for an hour, marveling at its new glow and soft feel. I then applied a vitamin C serum as this is a normal part of my skincare routine. Surprisingly, it didn’t sting as I thought it might, perhaps since I gave my skin time to adjust after dermaplaning.
Following the vitamin C serum, I then added a moisturizer with SPF 30 sunscreen within (anyone on BeautyTok has certainly heard this imperative advice before!). “Sunscreen is a non-negotiable,” Casey says regarding everyday skincare and following a shaving process such as this. She recommends grabbing one with “broad-spectrum, UVA/UVB protection” since this will “help lock in the antioxidant serum and seal the skin barrier, offering protection and hydration.”
Lastly, I began applying my facial primer, foundation, and blush products to my skin as I usually would after cleansing, using a serum, moisturizer, and sunscreen. My makeup-free skin before dermaplaning and the second shows how my face makeup looked 8 hours after dermaplaning in the morning. My pores were not visible, my makeup did not emphasize any facial hair, and ultimately, dry skin patches were removed, resulting in a clump-free and not cakey makeup look.

Discover the Latest Trends and Fashion Tips on SheFinds. If you’re like me and have just discovered the magic of tucking a crisp white tee into high-waist jeans or a silk midi skirt, you’re in for a treat. This best-kept fashion-girl secret is that you can wear a cotton t-shirt and make it fashion. It’s so easy to pull off—but you just need to have the right white tee.
Not all white tees are created equal. To truly master the white-tee-tucked look, you need one that is crisp, not see-through, has fitted sleeves, the perfect neck hole, and a fitted silhouette that can be tucked under without forming clumps. If it sounds like the holy grail, that’s because it is. For years, I’d grab one of those loose, drape-y tees made popular in the early aughts and half-tuck it into skinnies. The look was always casual and sometimes even cool–but never fashion.
Then, while outfit stalking on “Like to Know It” (because how else do we figure out how to wear new clothes?), I came across Uniqlo’s crew neck short sleeve t-shirt. This is it. This is the shirt. I ordered the t-shirt (or rather, I received a free one to review for the site) and it was everything that other t-shirts I’ve tried were not. Fashun, hunni!
This revelation is part of the brand’s Spring/Summer 2019 collection, which they have decided to carry forward to fall. And with good reason–because it is, hands down, the world’s best white t-shirt. First, and foremost, it’s reasonably priced. It costs exactly $14.90, which is just a few dollars more than those 3-pack tees you can buy at the drugstore, and it shows. Uniqlo’s take on the classic looks and feels so much more expensive than they are. It makes you wonder why we live in a world where the $100 designer t-shirt even exists.
Secondly, I don’t know what they’ve done with the fabrication, but the shirt is thick enough to not be see-through, yet still breathable. It has a perfect fit that flatters without clinging too tightly. The sleeves are just the right length, and the neckline is neither too high nor too low. It’s the kind of shirt that you can wear on its own or layer under a blazer or cardigan.
