Donald Glover and Maya Erskine on Mr. and Mrs. Smith season 1 cliffhanger

Donald Glover and Maya Erskine have captivated audiences with their performances in Amazon Prime Video’s new spy series, “Mr. and Mrs. Smith.” The show, which premiered in February, has quickly become a hit, leaving fans eagerly awaiting news about a potential second season, especially after the intense cliffhanger in the Season 1 finale.

“Mr. and Mrs. Smith” stars Glover and Erskine as John and Jane Smith, two spies who enter into an arranged marriage. This series is a fresh take on the 2005 action-comedy film of the same name, which originally starred Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt. The new adaptation introduces several changes, including the circumstances under which the Smiths first meet.

Glover, who is also a co-creator of the series, shared his initial hesitation about remakes. “I’m not a big fan of remakes, so this was kind of a big deal to take on,” he told Entertainment Tonight. “Once I saw the original, I thought, ‘This is a good date movie.’ And I wondered, ‘Maybe I could make a good date show out of it?’ Something my wife and I could watch together.”

Glover even reached out to Brad Pitt for advice on the role. “Brad was like, you know, he just Brad Pitt-ed his way out of it,” Glover said. “I asked for some tips, and he just charmed his way out of it, saying, ‘Oh, you’ll do great, kid.’”

All eight episodes of the first season were released on Prime Video on February 2. Recently, Amazon confirmed that “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” will return for a second season in May 2024. However, sources told Variety that Glover and Erskine are not expected to reprise their roles in the upcoming season. Amazon and the actors’ representatives have declined to comment on their potential return. Despite this, Glover remains credited as a co-creator and executive producer, and co-creator Francesca Sloane will continue as the showrunner for Season 2.

In February, Sloane expressed her enthusiasm for continuing the story. “I think there’s definitely a lot more story to tell here,” she told EW. “We feel like this is a fully satisfied story if it were to just live on its own, but it definitely has more legs to keep going.”

Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon MGM Studios, echoed this sentiment. “We are excited to announce that a second season of our groundbreaking spy series, ‘Mr. and Mrs. Smith,’ is in the works for our global Prime Video customers,” she said. “The success of the first season, with its incredibly modern, sexy reinvention of the original film, is a testament to the brilliant creators Donald Glover and Francesca Sloane. We are proud to bring you another season filled with unforgettable journeys and new adventures.”

Glover, who also performs as Childish Gambino, recently announced his “New World Tour,” which will run from August 2024 to February 2025. This tour could explain his potential absence from the second season of “Mr. and Mrs. Smith.”

If Glover and Erskine do not return, the show might adopt an anthology format, introducing a new couple to take on the names Jane and John Smith. This approach would be similar to how Glover and Erskine’s characters were introduced in the first season. However, if their characters do return, the second season could pick up after the bloody cliffhanger of Season 1.

In the finale, John and Jane are hunting each other down in the streets of NYC, attempting to “terminate” one another. Thanks to a truth serum, they come together just in time to stop the Other Jane and John Smith, who were sent to kill them. The Other John is killed, while our John is shot in the stomach. In the panic room, John’s bullet wound appears fatal, and Jane prepares to fight the Other Jane, who is waiting outside the door. Before the final shootout, Jane reveals she only has one bullet left, but the last scene shows three gun flashes from the window. It remains unclear whether the Smiths are alive or if they managed to kill the Other Jane.

The first season of “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” is currently streaming on Prime Video, and fans are eagerly awaiting more details about the cast and plot for Season 2. The cliffhanger has left many questions unanswered, and viewers are keen to see how the story will unfold.
