Donald Trump Hopes Assassination Attempt Will ‘Unite America’

Donald Trump believes that the recent assassination attempt on his life could serve as a rallying point to "unite the country." The 76-year-old former president was shot at by Thomas Matthew Crooks, who was later killed by Secret Service agents, during a campaign event in Pennsylvania on Saturday. Initially, Trump had planned to direct his speech at his opponent, President Joe Biden, during the upcoming Republican National Convention in Milwaukee. However, following the incident, he stated that he would be delivering an "entirely different" address.

In an interview with the Washington Examiner, Trump explained, "The speech I was going to give on Thursday was going to be fantastic. If this hadn’t happened, it would have been one of the most incredible speeches ever. Honestly, now it will be a totally different speech. This is an opportunity to unite the country. I’ve been given that chance… It’s a moment to unite not just the nation, but the whole world. The speech will be very different, very different from what it would have been two days ago."

The former star of "The Apprentice" shifted his focus from attacking Biden’s policies and energizing his voter base to expressing his belief that the attack has significantly altered the trajectory of his campaign. Trump recounted that he likely avoided fatal injury by stepping away from the crowd to check data displayed on a screen for his speech.

He remarked, "That reality is sinking in. I rarely take my eyes off the crowd. If I hadn’t looked away at that moment, well, we wouldn’t be having this conversation today, would we?"

After the attack, Trump raised his hand while being escorted off the stage to reassure the audience that he was okay. He added, "And that America is moving forward, that we are strong. It’s hard to describe what I felt, but I knew the world was watching. I knew history would judge this, and I had to let them know that we are okay."

In the unfortunate event, former fire chief Corey Comperatore lost his life, while two supporters, David Dutch and James Copenhaver, were injured but are currently in stable condition in the hospital.
