Earthquake Today in Mexico: Seismic Activity News July 23, 2024

On Tuesday, July 23, the National Seismological Service of Mexico reported a series of seismic activities across various regions. The following are some notable events recorded:

At 04:48 AM, a magnitude 3.2 earthquake struck 12 km east of Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca, at a depth of 9.7 km. Shortly before this, at 04:21 AM, a magnitude 3.3 quake was detected 62 km south of Coalcomán, Michoacán, also at a depth of 5 km.

Earlier, at 04:00 AM, a magnitude 3.4 earthquake occurred 8 km northeast of Tecpan, Guerrero, with a depth of 49.5 km. In the northwest region, at 03:58 AM, another event measured 3.1 magnitude, located 71 km northwest of San Felipe, Baja California, at a shallow depth of 5.5 km.

Additional quakes included two separate 3.6 magnitude events, one at 03:43 AM southeast of Salina Cruz, Oaxaca, and another at 03:38 AM southwest of Tonala, Chiapas. Their depths were recorded at 16.1 km and 98.5 km, respectively.

As the day progressed, several further seismic events were recorded, indicating the ongoing seismic activity. Notably, a magnitude 3.9 earthquake was reported at 02:02 AM, located 16 km northeast of Las Guacamayas, Michoacán, at a depth of 25.4 km.

These seismic activities highlight Mexico’s location within a highly active seismic zone, primarily influenced by five tectonic plates: the Caribbean, North American, Pacific, Rivera, and Cocos plates. This complex geological situation leads to frequent seismic events, which are part of the country’s natural hazard landscape.

Currently, there is no precise way to predict when earthquakes will occur. The National Seismological Service stresses that while modern technology can detect earthquakes moments before they are felt, it cannot predict their timing.

This ongoing seismic activity serves as a reminder of the importance of being well-prepared for any emergencies that may arise due to earthquakes.
