Ecuador Promotes Its Sustainable Chocolate in the United Kingdom

Ecuador is working to enhance the visibility and sales of its sustainable chocolate in the United Kingdom, capitalizing on the growing interest in fair trade products. In a country where chocolate consumption averages 12 kilograms per person each year, this initiative comes at a promising time.

Representatives from Paccari, a chocolate brand that has been established in the UK for 12 years, shared their plans during tasting events held in London and Edinburgh. Known for its ethical products, Paccari aims to increase its presence in this market.

Founded in 2002 by Santiago Peralta and Carla Barbotó, Paccari is a family-run business devoted to raising awareness among younger generations about environmentally sustainable practices. Peralta emphasized the importance of balancing economic, social, and natural interests, particularly in today’s world.

The co-founder acknowledged the logistical challenges that have emerged since the UK left the European Union. However, he highlighted the UK as a market with a significant demand for chocolate, where approximately 20% of consumers value sustainability in their purchases.

Paccari, which translates to “nature” in Quechua, produces dark chocolate containing 60% high-quality cacao. The company emphasizes ethical practices, offering organic, vegan, biodynamic, and gluten-free products, with exports to 42 countries.

In an innovative move, the brand introduced the concept of “terroir,” which is commonly associated with wine, by pairing its chocolate with Scotch whisky. This collaboration with the Scotch Whisky Society has been very well received, according to Peralta.

Peralta also spoke out about the issue of slavery in cacao production, asserting that “the conscious consumer is the one who will change things.” He noted a significant challenge facing the industry today: “Currently, we have a major problem; basically, half of the world’s cacao has been lost due to climate change.” This loss has substantial implications for the cost and supply of chocolate.

This initiative highlights Ecuador’s commitment to sustainable practices in chocolate production while educating consumers about the importance of ethical sourcing. By promoting high-quality, sustainable products, Paccari hopes to create a more awareness-driven market in the UK.
