Eddie Murphy has expressed a desire to create a film that combines all the roles he has played throughout his career. The 63-year-old actor is thrilled to reprise his role as Donkey in the upcoming fifth film of the DreamWorks franchise, “Shrek.” He also mentioned that he would love to revisit any of his characters, as long as the script is right.
In an interview with WHO magazine in Australia, Murphy stated, “Of course. We are making another ‘Shrek’ movie, which will be great. We already did ‘Coming 2 America’ and now we are working on a new script for another production. I like the idea of doing a mash-up movie with all my characters and playing them all. It would be fun. But if the idea is good and the script is right, I would return to any of my characters.”
The original cast, including Mike Myers and Cameron Diaz, will also be returning for this next installment, which is set to hit theaters on July 1, 2026. This marks a 16-year gap since the release of the last film, “Shrek Forever After.”
The studio confirmed the news on social media platform X. A spokesperson remarked, “Not too far, far away… @Shrek 5 will be in theaters on July 1, 2026, with Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz.”
Walt Dohrn, who previously worked as a writer and artist on the second and third films, as well as serving as the Head of Story on the fourth film, will direct the new movie. Brad Ableson will co-direct, and Gina Shay will return to produce alongside Chris Meledandri, the CEO of Illumination.
This confirmation follows Eddie Murphy’s earlier comments about starting work on the film, which may also include a spin-off featuring his character, Donkey. He revealed to Collider, “We started working on ‘Shrek’ about four or five months ago. I recorded the first act, and we will complete it this year.”
Chris Meledandri, the founder of Illumination, first mentioned the film last year and expressed hopes of reuniting the original cast. He told Variety, “We hope the original cast returns. We’re just beginning to talk, and there seems to be tremendous enthusiasm from the actors to come back.”
