Elections in the U.S.: What’s Next for the Democratic Primaries

After weeks of pressure from the Democratic Party to withdraw from the presidential race, Joe Biden has decided to step down from the competition. Although the Democrats have yet to officially choose a candidate for the upcoming elections, Biden’s endorsement of his vice president, Kamala Harris, suggests that she will take on that role.

Within the Democratic Party, there are two distinct perspectives regarding the direction of their nomination process. International analyst Juan Negri explained that some party members believe it’s best to arrive at the Convention with a defined ticket, which would benefit Kamala Harris. As the vice president, she would inherit the campaign funds initially allocated to Biden. However, others, including former President Obama, argue that Kamala may not be the strongest candidate, suggesting it might be an opportunity to consider an alternative.

Turning to the Republican campaign, Negri noted that Biden’s announcement to withdraw after the Republican Convention forces the GOP to rethink their strategy. Until now, their main argument has been Biden’s age, suggesting he is too old to lead the country. Yet, with Kamala Harris as the potential candidate, the focus may shift to her perceived lack of executive experience, particularly in areas like immigration, where she has not been a prominent figure.

Regarding voter sentiment, Negri mentioned that while Trump’s staunch supporters are unlikely to be swayed by Kamala, there is a moderate voter segment that might prefer her over Biden. He highlighted that Kamala’s candidacy could evoke memories of the Obama presidency, a time many remember fondly for its stability and recovery.

As for the possibility of Michelle Obama running for office, Negri deemed that unlikely. He pointed out that, although politicians often change their minds, Michelle has shown little interest in pursuing a candidacy. Furthermore, he added that as a Black woman, she might face demographic challenges that could limit her appeal in certain voter segments, making it unlikely for her to play a significant role in this election.
