Electoral Tribunal Set to Validate Sheinbaum’s Win; No AMLO or Cartel Interference

Electoral Tribunal Set to Validate Sheinbaum’s Win; No AMLO or Cartel Interference

Nearly two months after the federal election, the Electoral Tribunal of the Federal Judiciary (TEPJF) is set to validate the presidential election results. This validation will confirm the victory of Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, the candidate from the coalition “Sigamos Haciendo Historia,” who won on June 2.

The draft proposal from the superior court justices indicates that they not only endorse Sheinbaum’s win but also dismiss allegations of interference from President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) and organized crime groups. The tribunal has concluded that the president’s actions did not affect the votes of more than 20 million citizens who favored Sheinbaum’s political option over her closest rival.

According to the project, which addresses three lawsuits regarding the election, the tribunal members are expected to reject the demand for election annulment (SUP-JDC-906/2024), asserting that the claim does not meet the legal requirements necessary for such actions.

The tribunal stated, “The attempt to annul the presidential election of the United Mexican States is unfounded, as outlined in the resolving section of this judgment.”

Additionally, the tribunal is likely to dismiss challenges presented by the National Action Party (PAN), Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD), as well as former presidential candidate Xóchitl Gálvez Ruiz. The justices determined that these parties failed to demonstrate legitimate legal interest or that their evidence was ineffective.

It is important to note that the opposition parties have accused the government of neglecting violence across the country and misusing social programs, which allegedly facilitated public officials’ interventions, vote-buying actions, and involvement from the president of the National Electoral Institute (INE), Guadalupe Taddei Zavala.

The tribunal dismissed these accusations, stating, “There are no convincing elements to support the claim that there was a biased application of social programs and coercion of citizens.”

Further information is ongoing as the tribunal finalizes its decision.
