At just 15 years old, Elena is emerging as one of the promising Latin singers who captivates us with the profound lyrics of her songs. In 2023, she introduced her compositions through her debut EP, Rara, and now she is thrilled to launch her first album, ¿Qué Tú Te Crees? This nine-track project highlights her authenticity and features a blend of pop, rock, and bachata rhythms.
The first single, No Quiero Amarte, offered just a taste of what she has in store. The matching music video complements the story of a courageous young woman confronting those who try to undermine her. In an interview with HOLA! Américas, Elena shared her thoughts on creating this new EP, the diverse musical styles it encompasses, and the inspiration behind her work.
Focusing on her future as a performer, the young Puerto Rican, who began playing piano at the age of four, also discussed her aspirations in theater. She has previously acted in productions like On Your Feet!, where she portrayed Little Gloria, and played Elsa in the Puerto Rican staging of Frozen.
Elena hopes that people can resonate with her music. "If you’re going through an emotional storm or feel that no one understands you, I want this album to help you feel less alone," she explained.
When asked about the variety of sounds in her album ¿Qué Tú Te Crees?, she noted, "It has a ton of musical variety. The core sound may be pop, but it branches out into sub-genres like disco-pop, bachata pop, and rock-pop." She delves into themes surrounding first love, heartbreak, and the intensity of emotions experienced during those moments.
The album title, ¿Qué Tú Te Crees? holds special significance. It is also the name of one of the songs and speaks to someone who has caused deep sadness and frustration in her life, challenging them with the question, “What do you think you’re doing to make me feel this way?”
Recording her second album was a unique experience for her. "It was amazing because I loved Rara, but it felt essential to move on to this next stage. Recording each song was fun. I collaborated with incredible producers like Andrés Castro and Gustavo González, who understood my vision," she expressed. The process enabled her to revisit the vulnerable emotions tied to her songwriting.
Elena described how, during live performances, she tries to reconnect with the feelings associated with the songs. "It’s a bit difficult to revisit those emotions, but it’s crucial to portray the character of Elena at that moment," she said. In moments before she performs, she takes the time to breathe and often seeks comfort from her parents.
Her single No Quiero Amarte captures the essence of heartbreak, depicting feelings of unreciprocated love where she feels stuck while the other person moves on. "It’s about a feeling of sadness and anger," she noted, expressing excitement about the song’s mix of bachata and some rock elements.
Elena is still in her teenage years, a time when emotions can be particularly intense. When asked about her writing process, she remarked, "I usually write about my personal experiences. Teens often feel overwhelmed by emotions, thinking the world is ending, but as we grow older, we realize it wasn’t such a big deal."
Looking ahead, she has dreams of collaborating with artists like Íñigo Quintero, known for Si No Estás, and Joaquina, who she admires greatly. "I would love to work with Angela Aguilar as well; her voice is beautiful, and she’s such a lovely person," Elena shared.
As for her future, Elena plans to continue in music while also remaining open to theater opportunities. "I will keep singing and creating music that resonates with people," she confirmed, and despite her commitments, she looks forward to participating in theater projects as they bring her joy.
Her journey has only just begun, and it’s clear that Elena is an artist to watch. With heartfelt lyrics and a vibrant musical style, she promises to connect with listeners worldwide.
