Numerous European leaders have expressed their gratitude towards U.S. President Joe Biden following his announcement not to seek re-election. His leadership and efforts to strengthen NATO amid significant tensions with Russia, especially due to its invasion of Ukraine, have been widely praised.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz shared his appreciation on social media, stating, “My friend Joe Biden has achieved a lot for his country, for Europe, and for the world. Thanks to him, transatlantic cooperation is closer, NATO is stronger, and the United States is a good and reliable partner for us. His decision not to run again deserves respect.”

U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer also voiced his respect for Biden’s choice, noting it was based on what he believes is best for the country. He conveyed a desire to continue collaborating with Biden throughout the remainder of his term.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk echoed these sentiments, highlighting the tough decisions Biden has made that have contributed to greater security and strengthened democracy in Poland, the U.S., and elsewhere. In a message on social media, Tusk stated, “Dear President Biden, you have made many difficult decisions that have made Poland, the U.S., and the world safer, and democracy stronger. I know you were motivated by the same considerations when announcing your final decision, probably the hardest of your life.”

The Prime Minister of the Czech Republic recognized Biden’s choice as “a responsible and personally difficult step,” commending it as a decision befitting a statesman. He expressed hope for a “good president” to emerge from the upcoming competitive democratic election among two strong candidates in the United States.

Irish Prime Minister Simon Harris also thanked Biden, characterizing him as “the voice of reason, multilateralism, and shared solutions” in response to the “horrible” invasion of Ukraine by Russia.

In a significant political shift, Biden has stepped aside from the race for the White House, supporting Vice President Kamala Harris, who has officially filed her candidacy with the Federal Election Commission. She is set to seek formal backing at the Democratic National Convention scheduled for next August.
