Alberto Núñez Feijóo, the leader of the Popular Party (PP), along with several regional presidents, met recently to discuss the party’s approach towards Vox, particularly in light of the disruption caused by Vox breaking agreements in five regional governments. This discussion took place during a relaxed lunch following a National Directorate meeting of the PP in Madrid, where they assessed the political landscape.
Feijóo took the opportunity to voice his concerns about Vox, criticizing them for their erratic behavior and suggesting that they have acted in ways that inadvertently support the current government. He emphasized that the party should focus on maintaining some distance from Vox, especially considering the latter’s decline in recent election outcomes and the rise of new parties like Luis Alvise Pérez’s group, ‘Se Acabó la Fiesta,’ which secured three seats in the European Parliament elections.
The conversation during the lunch also touched on irregular immigration and the ongoing reform of the Immigration Law. The current government, led by Pedro Sánchez, is perceived by PP members as unyielding in negotiations, particularly in relation to a proposed law aimed at reallocating unaccompanied minors from overwhelmed regions like the Canary Islands. Despite this, some PP leaders remain hopeful for a potential agreement, especially concerning the necessary funding for regional governments to support these minors.
Housing issues were another concern raised during the meeting. PP leaders highlighted the need to address the growing housing crisis in Spain. They expressed their commitment to continuing collaborative efforts, such as those initiated in Salamanca, which aim to establish a common university entrance exam starting in 2025.
Despite a legal summons for Sánchez related to an investigation involving his wife, this matter did not dominate the discussion. Feijóo’s focus remained on current issues affecting the country.
In summation of the gathering, Cuca Gamarra, the PP’s Secretary General, acknowledged the hard work put in over the past political year and wished everyone a restful break. However, Feijóo reminded party members to stay alert for potential early elections during their summer vacation. He underscored the importance of presenting a solid political alternative against what he described as the stagnation and selfishness of Sánchez’s administration, claiming that while the current government is beyond saving, Spain still has hope for a better path forward.
