Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield are set to lead a new romantic comedy, “We Live in Time,” and fans couldn’t be more excited. The buzz around this project started when the two actors presented together at the Oscars on March 12, sparking immediate interest in their on-screen chemistry. Just days later, on March 14, Deadline reported that Garfield and Pugh were in negotiations to star in the film. By early April, photos from the set confirmed that the negotiations were successful, and the project was officially underway.
The first trailer for “We Live in Time” was released on July 10, offering a glimpse into what promises to be a heart-wrenching yet sweet story. The trailer showcases Garfield and Pugh as young lovers and parents dealing with illness, highlighting their undeniable chemistry.
The film is being produced by StudioCanal and SunnyMarch, with John Crowley directing. Crowley previously worked with Garfield on the 2007 drama “Boy A” and is best known for his award-winning film “Brooklyn.” The script is penned by Nick Payne, the creator of “Wanderlust.” The cast also includes Adam James, and Benedict Cumberbatch is serving as an executive producer.
While the plot details are being kept under wraps, Deadline describes the film as “a funny, deeply moving, and immersive love story.” This is particularly intriguing for fans of Garfield and Pugh, who are not typically known for lighthearted roles. Pugh, in particular, has a penchant for intense characters, as she mentioned during the premiere of “A Good Person” on March 8. In that film, written and directed by her ex-boyfriend Zach Braff, Pugh plays a recovering addict. She stated, “I like finding the ugliness in humans. I love being raw. I love being given a script where it challenges myself, and I have never picked a role unless I’ve been scared of it.”
Garfield and Pugh first met in person at the 2023 Oscars rehearsal. Pugh shared in an interview with Entertainment Tonight, “I met him over Zoom a few months ago, but at the rehearsal was the first time that I met him. So it was like so relieving that it worked and we got along and we laugh—we can laugh at everything. And then, of course, on the day I made so many near mistakes that he just saved me for.”
Photos from the set of “We Live in Time” surfaced on April 3, showing Garfield and Pugh in various scenes. In one photo, Pugh lifts a fruit for Garfield to smell at a farmers market, while another shows them smiling and holding cups of coffee. These images have only heightened the anticipation for the film.
The film marks a significant shift for both actors. Pugh has been involved in a variety of genre-bending roles, from Ari Aster’s horror film “Midsommar” to Olivia Wilde’s “Don’t Worry Darling,” and her superhero roles in Marvel Studios’ “Black Widow” and “Hawkeye.” Garfield, on the other hand, has recently been seen in Lin-Manuel Miranda’s “Tick, Tick… Boom!,” Michael Showalter’s “The Eyes of Tammy Faye,” and Hulu’s “Under the Banner of Heaven.” Neither actor has appeared in a romantic comedy for quite some time, making this project all the more exciting.
StudioCanal’s “We Live in Time” is described as “a funny, deeply moving, and immersive love story.” John Crowley, known for his work on “Brooklyn” and “The Goldfinch,” will direct the film. British playwright Nick Payne is writing the script, and the producing team includes Leah Clarke, Adam Ackland, and Guy Heeley. Benedict Cumberbatch will serve as an executive producer.
Although the plot details are still under wraps, the project is set to film later this year. In May 2023, The Hollywood Reporter announced that A24 had picked up the distribution rights. This news has only added to the excitement surrounding the film, as fans eagerly await more information about the story and supporting cast.
Pugh is currently busy with several new projects. She will next be seen in Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer,” Marvel’s “The Thunderbolts,” and “Dune: Part Two,” the anticipated sequel to Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of Frank Herbert’s sci-fi space opera. Garfield, meanwhile, will star in a new television series titled “Hot Air,” where he plays Richard Branson. The limited series will explore how the British entrepreneur handled the rise of his company, Virgin Atlantic.
The announcement of “We Live in Time” comes as a pleasant surprise, especially considering Pugh’s recent comments about her tendency to gravitate toward intense roles. While promoting “A Good Person,” she mentioned that her preference for challenging roles might prevent her from taking on a romantic comedy. However, the chemistry between Pugh and Garfield, as seen during their Oscars presentation, suggests that this “immersive love story” will be something special.
No release date for “We Live in Time” has been provided yet, but filming is expected to begin later this year. Fans of both actors are eagerly awaiting more updates and are excited to see how this romantic comedy unfolds.
