Israel launched an airstrike on the port of Hodeida in western Yemen as a fierce retaliation for an attack by Houthi groups. Early Saturday morning, these groups managed to hit a building in central Tel Aviv with a drone, resulting in one death and multiple injuries.
In response, Israel targeted a significant section of the Hodeida port, claiming that the destroyed terminals were used for supplying Iranian weapons to Yemen, including the type of drone used in the attacks on Saturday. The Houthis acknowledged that the airstrikes had resulted in six fatalities and 83 injuries, with many of the wounded in serious condition.
These were not the only attacks by Israel in recent hours. On Sunday, Israeli bombs also targeted areas in the Gaza Strip, focusing on what were described as “Hamas targets.” Additionally, Israel conducted strikes in southern Lebanon in retaliation for attacks on its territory carried out by Iran-backed groups.
The situation is particularly troubling. The open war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza was ignited by a massacre and hostage situation orchestrated by the Islamist group in southern Israel on October 7. This conflict keeps the Middle East on edge, raising concerns that it could escalate into a wider regional conflict involving Israel and Iran, which would pose a threat not only to that region but to the entire world.
On the Lebanese border, artillery exchanges occur daily between Hezbollah, a Shiite group aligned with Iran, and the Israeli military. Meanwhile, in Yemen, Houthi rebels, who partially control the country, have launched attacks for months against ships they claim are linked to Israel in the Red Sea, expressing solidarity with the Palestinians in Gaza.
Although the Houthis regularly fire missiles at Israeli cities—most of which are intercepted—one missile launched from Yemen toward Eilat was successfully intercepted by the Israeli military on Sunday, just hours after the airstrike on Hodeida.
The reported toll from the Israeli bombing in Hodeida is six dead, although the actual number might be higher. The Yemeni Health Ministry stated, “Six people have been martyred, three others are missing, and 83 have been injured,” increasing the initial count of three dead and 87 wounded.
Aligned with Iran, the Houthi rebels and the Lebanese movement Hezbollah have opened fronts against Israel to “support” Palestinians in Gaza, which has been under siege and bombardment since October 7.
In response to the Hodeida bombing, Yahya Saree, a military spokesperson for the Houthis, declared, “We will respond to this aggression… We will not hesitate to attack vital targets of the Israeli enemy.” Meanwhile, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant warned that the military would strike back against the Houthis if they dared to launch more missiles into Israel.
Furthermore, the Iranian Foreign Ministry condemned “the attacks by the Zionist regime” in Yemen, blaming Israel and its allies, including the United States, for the dangerous consequences of ongoing crimes in Gaza and attacks against Yemen.
For months, the Houthis have been conducting strikes in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden against ships they associate with Israel. They have also targeted Israeli cities with missiles, although most have been intercepted.
