Former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa Runs for California Governor

Former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, the first Latino to lead the city, has announced his candidacy for California governor in 2026. This marks his second attempt to take the helm of the Golden State.

At 71 years old, Villaraigosa made his announcement via a YouTube video, where he emphasized his extensive experience in addressing issues and forging consensus between Democrats and Republicans. He highlighted his track record of enhancing safety, education, and budget management—crucial topics during his two terms in office from 2005 to 2013 in Los Angeles, the second-most populous city in the U.S.

During his tenure, Villaraigosa faced the challenges posed by the Great Recession of 2008. He focused on strengthening the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) to address rising concerns about crime and public safety.

Villaraigosa also cited his experience as the former speaker of the California Assembly, proposing a return to basics by lowering costs for small businesses and middle-income families. “People care more about what you’re going to do for them… and the best way to show them what you can do is to demonstrate what you’ve accomplished in the past,” he stated in his video.

Born in Los Angeles to Mexican roots, Villaraigosa previously ran for governor in 2018, finishing third in the Democratic primary, which was ultimately won by Gavin Newsom, who will leave office in 2026.

Several prominent Democrats have already declared their candidacies to lead California, which boasts the fifth-largest economy in the world. Among them are Lieutenant Governor Eleni Kounalakis, State Senator Toni Atkins, and former State Controller Betty Yee.

As the election approaches, the political landscape in California is set to intensify, with Villaraigosa aiming to make his mark in this competitive race.
