Goldie Hawn Wants to Make Movie with Famous Family Before They All Get “Too Old”

Goldie Hawn has a dream project in mind, and it involves her entire family. The 78-year-old actress recently shared her desire to create a movie featuring her famous family members before they all get “too old.” During an appearance on SiriusXM’s Let’s Talk Off Camera with Kelly Ripa, Hawn expressed her enthusiasm for the idea, which was sparked by a suggestion from host Kelly Ripa.

Ripa had initially pitched the idea of a Thanksgiving dinner-themed reality series involving Hawn’s children. However, Hawn had a different vision. “What I would love, actually, before we all get, you know, too old, [it] would be so great to do a movie together,” Hawn said. “Wouldn’t it? It would be so fun and so crazy and oh my God.”

The idea of a family movie isn’t entirely new to Hawn, but she acknowledged that there are some hurdles to overcome. “It’s all about a writer,” Hawn explained when Ripa asked why the family hasn’t already embarked on such a project. “I have to get permission first from my family.” Ripa humorously suggested that Hawn could surprise her family by inviting them to a party and then revealing that the party was actually the first scene of the movie.

“Here’s how it goes: You tell them you’re having a party for Kurt [Russell]. What they don’t realize is it’s a party scene for the opening of the movie, so they just all arrive and then after the first scene is shot, surprise, surprise,” Ripa said. “You pitch the idea for the movie and you’ve already got the opening scene in the can. They can’t argue with it. The establishing scene has happened.”

Hawn found the idea amusing but admitted it could be chaotic. “Oh my god. It’s really true though. It’s a mess. It would be a mess,” she said. Despite the potential chaos, Hawn mentioned that the family is considering another project. “We might do something with Oliver that is a cartoon, so in other words, we would all be the voices of that. That would be a lot of fun.”

Hawn has been in a relationship with actor Kurt Russell since 1983, and together they share a blended family of actors. Their children include Kate Hudson, 45, and Oliver Hudson, 47, whom Hawn shares with her ex-husband Bill Hudson, as well as Wyatt Russell, 37, whom Hawn and Russell welcomed together. Hawn is also a stepmother to Russell’s oldest son, Boston, 44, from his previous marriage to Season Hubley.

During her appearance on Ripa’s podcast, Hawn also touched on family dynamics, revealing that her daughter Kate believes Oliver is her favorite. “I tried to say to her, ‘You know, nobody’s really my favorite. … You’re all different. But the truth is … [your] firstborn is always one of the most interesting and memorable experiences, particularly because you don’t have other children,” Hawn explained. “You only have one — until you have the second one.”

Hawn’s extensive career in film includes an Oscar win for her role as Toni Simmons in the 1969 film Cactus Flower and another nomination for her role in the 1980 film Private Benjamin. More recently, she starred as Mrs. Claus in the Netflix movie The Christmas Chronicles, opposite Kurt Russell as Santa Claus. The couple reprised their roles in The Christmas Chronicles 2, released in 2020.

The idea of a family movie is not just a whimsical thought for Hawn; it’s a genuine desire to create something memorable with her loved ones. “What I would love, actually — before we all get too old — [it] would be so great to do a movie together,” Hawn reiterated during her podcast appearance. “Wouldn’t it? It would be so fun and so crazy and oh, my God.”

While the logistics of such a project may be challenging, Hawn’s enthusiasm is evident. The possibility of a family cartoon project with Oliver Hudson also seems to be on the horizon, offering a fun and creative way for the family to collaborate.

Hawn and Russell have never married, a decision Hawn addressed in a July 2023 appearance on CNN’s Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace? “Why should we get married? Isn’t that a better question?” Hawn responded when asked about their choice. She emphasized the freedom and flexibility that comes with their arrangement, allowing them to make daily decisions about their relationship.

As Hawn continues to explore ways to bring her family together on screen, fans can only hope that her dream project becomes a reality. Whether it’s a live-action film or a cartoon, the idea of seeing the Hawn-Russell family collaborate on a creative endeavor is undoubtedly exciting.
