Gran Canaria urges Spain to urgently pass decree for migrant minors’ care

Antonio Morales, the President of the Gran Canaria Cabildo, has called on the Spanish government to swiftly implement a decree that would mandate the distribution of unaccompanied minor immigrants across all autonomous communities in the country.

Morales made this statement after the Congress of Deputies failed to advance the amendment of Article 35 of the Immigration Law, which was intended to regulate the distribution of unaccompanied minors. He expressed that this rejection represents “a tremendous disregard by the far-right and the right-wing, which increasingly resembles the far-right,” regardless of whether they are Catalan or from other parts of Spain. He emphasized that this disregard impacts not only the reality in the Canary Islands but also the rights of minors and international law.

Morales described the absence of viable solutions to support these vulnerable individuals as unacceptable. He noted that despite repeated assertions that there are “no means, resources, or possibilities” to provide these minors with dignified care, there has been a lack of progress. According to an official statement from the island’s government, Morales believes it is unjust that a solidarity-based reception is being rejected across the country.

He pointed out the incomprehensibility of the Canarian Popular Party deputies ignoring the needs of the region in favor of their party’s interests. He characterized this as an act of absolute irresponsibility and lamented that negotiations have not been prioritized to create solutions for the reception of unaccompanied minors on a national level.

In conclusion, Morales urged all Canarian deputies, regardless of political affiliation, to prioritize the interests of their constituents over party lines. He warned that failing to do so would be an enormous irresponsibility.
