Haas signs French driver Esteban Ocon to a “multi-year” contract

The American racing team Haas announced the signing of French driver Esteban Ocon on Thursday. The multi-year contract, which doesn’t specify its duration, will take effect in the upcoming Formula One season.

Ocon, who currently drives for Alpine, will team up with British rookie Oliver Bearman. This partnership marks a significant moment, as Ocon, who has been in the sport since 2016, becomes the first grand prix winner to race for Haas since the team’s inception.

Having made his F1 debut in 2016, Ocon secured his only victory at the 2021 Hungarian Grand Prix. Throughout his career, he has competed in 146 races for teams like Manor Racing, Force India, Renault, and Alpine, accumulating 425 points and three podium finishes. His best season was in 2022 when he finished eighth in the drivers’ championship. As of 2024, Ocon has recorded three top-ten finishes, with tenth-place results in Miami, Canada, and Spain.

Gene Haas, the team owner, emphasized the importance of having a driver with a solid pedigree in Formula One. He pointed out that Ocon’s consistency in scoring points is crucial for the team’s goal of improving on-track performance. Haas expressed his excitement about the team’s blend of youth and experience.

Team principal Ayao Komatsu shared his enthusiasm for bringing Ocon on board, having recognized his talent for many years. Komatsu recalled the first race Ocon participated in a Formula car, where he served as Ocon’s track engineer. He praised Ocon’s impressive run in lower categories, leading to his European Formula 3 championship in 2014. The experience that Ocon brings, especially from being part of a manufacturer team, is seen as a valuable asset.

Ocon himself commented on joining a highly ambitious team. He expressed gratitude towards Haas and Komatsu for their trust and support, and he looks forward to contributing to Haas F1 Team’s exciting plans and clear goals for the future.

With Ocon’s signing alongside Oliver Bearman, Haas will see a complete overhaul of its driver lineup, moving on from current drivers Kevin Magnussen and Nico Hulkenberg.
