Kamala Harris, the Democratic candidate for the presidency and current Vice President of the United States, achieved significant support on Tuesday night, securing enough delegates to clinch her presidential nomination ahead of the upcoming Democratic National Convention in Chicago on August 19. According to estimates from U.S. media, Harris garnered the endorsement of 1,976 delegates, surpassing the necessary 1,968 delegates in just 24 hours. This surge of backing came from numerous state delegations and is expected to grow further in the coming days, as reported by CNN.
In her statements on social media, Harris contrasted her vision with that of Donald Trump, the former president and Republican candidate. She emphasized that Trump aims to revert the country to a time when many Americans lacked full freedoms and rights. Harris expressed a commitment to a brighter future that embraces all Americans, stating, “We believe in a future where everyone has the opportunity not just to get by, but to thrive.”
The Vice President focused on creating a nation with affordable healthcare for everyone and ensuring that all seniors can retire with dignity, specifically prioritizing the needs of the middle class. She envisioned a future where no child grows up in poverty, where homeownership is attainable, and where families can access paid family leave and affordable childcare. “Building the middle class will be a defining goal of my presidency,” she added.
Since Harris announced her candidacy to the Federal Election Commission, 15 state delegations publicly endorsed her, including those from California, New York, Louisiana, Maryland, Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Wisconsin, Maine, Massachusetts, Utah, Iowa, South Dakota, and Nevada. Notably, the previous day, the Association of Democratic State Committees revealed that most of the 57 state parties had expressed their support for Harris’s candidacy, although they did not specify which ones.
Harris’s strong start as a candidate translated into fundraising success, with her campaign raising $81 million (approximately €74.4 million). Despite this positive momentum and backing from many party delegates, prominent Democratic figures such as Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries have yet to comment on her candidacy.
