Recent polls about the upcoming presidential elections in the United States indicate a slight improvement for Vice President Kamala Harris. However, like President Joe Biden, she would still lose against Republican Donald Trump if elections were held today.
These surveys were conducted before President Biden announced on Sunday that he would not seek reelection, which means respondents were addressing a hypothetical scenario involving Harris. The latest YouGov poll for CBS News gives Trump a five-point lead over Biden (52% to 47%), and a slightly narrower three-point advantage over Harris (51% to 48%).
Another poll from NBC News shows a similar two-point lead for Trump, who is ahead of Biden (45% to 43%) and Harris (47% to 45%). Fox News also reported comparable results, placing Trump ahead of both candidates with a score of 49% to 48%.
Interestingly, a poll from Marist for NPR and PBS is the only one that shows a Democratic ticket leading, highlighting Biden’s better performance against Trump (50% to 48%) compared to Harris’s (50% to 49%).
While the overall numbers are important, key battleground states like Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Nevada, Georgia, and Arizona are of even greater concern in U.S. elections. A Siena poll for The New York Times revealed that Harris performed better than Biden in Pennsylvania and Virginia. In Pennsylvania, Trump leads Biden by three points (48% to 45%), whereas Harris trails Trump by just one point (48% to 47%). In Virginia, Harris outperformed Trump by five points (49% to 44%), which is two points more than Biden’s performance (48% to 45%).
In terms of popularity, Harris holds an approval rating of 38.3%, closely mirroring Biden at 38.6% and trailing behind Trump at 42.1%. However, Harris has the lowest unpopularity rating among the three candidates, standing at 51.4%. In contrast, Biden’s unpopularity sits at 56.2%, while Trump’s is at 53.3%.
In conclusion, while Harris shows potential as a candidate for the Democratic ticket, the path to victory in the upcoming elections remains challenging, particularly against a strong opponent like Donald Trump. (c) EFE Agency.
