Hirving Lozano’s San Diego signs former Manchester United star Paddy McNair

San Diego FC, the franchise set to join Major League Soccer (MLS) in 2025, recently announced the signing of Northern Irish defender Paddy McNair. He will be part of an ambitious sports project led by Mexican winger Hirving Lozano.

The club confirmed that it has acquired McNair on a three-year contract, which will last until the end of the 2027 MLS season, with the option for an additional year. McNair joins San Diego FC as a free agent, having completed his contract with Middlesbrough in June. Additionally, the club has reached an agreement with West Bromwich Albion from the English Championship to loan McNair for the remainder of the 2024 season.

McNair arrives in MLS following an extensive career in England, where he began his journey with Manchester United’s youth academy. He joined United at just 14 years old and signed his first professional contract in 2011, making his debut with the first team in 2014.

After appearing in 27 matches for United, McNair transferred to Sunderland in 2016. He later moved to Middlesbrough two years later.

Reflecting on his move, McNair expressed enthusiasm for joining San Diego FC, describing it as an exciting new chapter. He shared, “When I first heard of San Diego, I had a feeling that it was time to play outside of England and to have the opportunity to play in MLS. It will be very special to be part of the club’s history, and I hope to bring my experience to help build a team that San Diego can be proud of.”

With this new addition, San Diego FC is building a competitive roster for its inaugural season in the MLS. For further information, readers can explore the official MLS website for more on player transfers and team news.
