On July 22, Reuters reported that Hollywood’s "Dembargo" on political donations has come to an end. Several fundraisers and celebrities, including rapper Cardi B, Oscar-winner Jamie Lee Curtis, and television producer Shonda Rhimes, have voiced their support for Kamala Harris as the next Democratic presidential candidate.
Excitement and relief swept through Los Angeles, the epicenter of the film and television industry and a critical source of funding for the Democratic campaign, following President Joe Biden’s announcement that he would not seek re-election.
Damon Lindelof, a producer known for "Lost," proclaimed the end of what he called the "Dembargo," which urged Hollywood supporters to halt donations to Democrats after Biden’s poor performance in a June debate against Republican Donald Trump.
In an Instagram post, Lindelof expressed feelings of "deep relief and gratitude," stating that for the first time, he felt genuine enthusiasm for the upcoming elections following Biden’s withdrawal. He declared, "Let’s just say the DEMBARGO is lifted. And here. We. GO!"
Hollywood is often characterized as a "cash cow for Democrats." In a June event hosted by actors George Clooney and Julia Roberts, over $30 million was raised, marking what Biden’s campaign called the largest Democratic fundraising effort in history.
However, after Biden’s shaky performance in the presidential debate on June 27, Clooney and others publicly urged the president to end his campaign. While Lindelof did not endorse a specific Democratic candidate, many in Hollywood have thrown their support behind Harris.
Abigail Disney, a Disney heir and one of those who previously called for Biden to step aside, told CNBC that she would resume her donations to Democrats, believing Harris would make an excellent candidate.
Rapper Cardi B had also called for Harris’s candidacy back in June after the debate debacle, triumphantly stating on social media, “AHAHAHAHA I TOLD YA KAMALA WAS GONNA BE THE 2024 CANDIDATE.”
