Terry Crews is making waves at San Diego Comic-Con with the unveiling of a new comic that serves as a spiritual sequel to the cult classic film Idiocracy. The actor, who famously portrayed President Dwayne Elizondo Mountain Dew Herbert Camacho, is excited to revisit this beloved character in a fresh format.
The original Idiocracy, directed by Mike Judge, was released to a lukewarm reception, grossing only $495,000 at the box office. However, over the years, it has gained a dedicated following, becoming a staple of pop culture. Crews expressed his disappointment at the film’s initial failure, recalling how it was only shown in two theaters for a single weekend. Despite this rocky start, the film has since been recognized by many prominent figures in the entertainment industry as a favorite.
In an exclusive interview, Crews shared his long-standing desire to bring Camacho back to life. He has been brainstorming spin-off ideas and digital concepts for years, but it wasn’t until recently that he decided to take matters into his own hands. He approached Mike Judge with the idea of creating a comic that explores what President Camacho would be like in today’s world.
“We went to Mike and we said, ‘Look, let’s talk about what if Camacho was back today? How would this happen?'” Crews explained. The duo decided to create a comic that would allow them to explore the possibilities of Camacho’s story in 2024.
The comic gives Crews and Judge the creative freedom to tell the story they want without the constraints of traditional media. However, they faced a challenge: they do not own the intellectual property. Crews clarified that the rights belong to Disney, and they had to navigate the legalities of creating the comic. Fortunately, they received approval from the studio, which allowed them to distribute the comic for free, as long as they weren’t selling it.
To commemorate the year the story takes place, Crews printed 2,024 copies of the comic, with 1,000 of those being given away at Comic-Con. The remaining copies will be distributed to local comic book stores, ensuring that fans have access to this unique piece of Idiocracy lore.
The cover of the comic features a striking image of Camacho, painted in a purple and smoky hue. His green left eye reflects a cityscape engulfed in flames, symbolizing the challenges he faces. Crews emphasized that Camacho is not a villain but rather a sympathetic character who genuinely wants to help others, despite his lack of intelligence.
“Our hope is that they decide, ‘Hey, let’s see if we can expand this. Let’s see if we can do a ten-episode show or a movie or something that’s still based in this world,'” Crews said, expressing his desire to see more stories set in the Idiocracy universe. He believes that everyone involved with the original film recognizes its status as a classic and wants to do justice to its legacy.
As Crews prepares to distribute copies of the comic at Comic-Con, he hopes that this project will spark conversations about the potential for further exploration of the Idiocracy world. The comic serves as a tribute to the original film while also paving the way for new stories and adventures.
With the excitement surrounding the release of the Camacho comic, fans of Idiocracy can look forward to a new chapter in the life of one of cinema’s most memorable characters. Terry Crews’s passion for the role and commitment to bringing Camacho back to the forefront is sure to resonate with audiences, both old and new.
