Jamie Dornan Shares Text Messages with ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ Co-Star Dakota Johnson

Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson, the stars of the Fifty Shades of Grey franchise, have maintained a close friendship long after the final film wrapped. Dornan, 42, recently shared that he was in touch with Johnson, 34, just a few days ago. Speaking at the Into Film Awards on July 1, Dornan mentioned, “I was just texting with her a couple days ago. I think she’s London bound a wee bit over the next few weeks, so [I’m] trying to see her and [fiancé] Chris [Martin] for dinner.”

Dornan confirmed that he and Johnson have stayed in contact since their time working together on the Fifty Shades series, which spanned from 2015 to 2018. Despite persistent rumors of a feud, Johnson clarified in a 2022 Vanity Fair interview that there was never any animosity between them. “There was never a time when we didn’t get along,” she said. “I know it’s weird, but he’s like a brother to me. I love him so, so, so much. And we were really there for each other. We had to really trust each other and protect each other.”

Johnson elaborated on their unique bond, explaining that the nature of their work required a deep level of trust and mutual support. “We were doing the weirdest things for years, and we needed to be a team: ‘We’re not doing that,’ or ‘You can’t do that camera angle.’ Sam [Taylor-Johnson] didn’t come back to direct after the first movie, and, as a female, she had brought a softer perspective,” she said. Johnson also expressed gratitude for the way they were treated during production and for being part of the series.

Dornan, too, has always denied any feud between them. In 2015, he told E! News, “Look, people are going to say that because it’s a story and people like to create a little bit of hype leading up to the film. It’s an obvious story to come up with, you know, if I was into the world of coming up with fake stories I’d maybe start to do that on a blog.”

The former co-stars have enjoyed reminiscing about their time on the steamy series. In 2020, Johnson was asked to choose between Dornan and his Fifty Shades character, Christian Grey, during a “Would You Rather?” segment on Stir Crazy With Josh Horowitz. When asked if she would prefer to join an erotic book club with Dornan or his fictional counterpart, Johnson replied, “Probably Jamie. He’s a lot funnier than Christian Grey.”

Johnson’s relationship with Dornan is not the only significant connection in her life. She has been in a long-term relationship with Coldplay frontman Chris Martin. The couple has been spotted together at various events, including the Glastonbury Festival, where Coldplay performed a headlining set on June 29. According to multiple outlets, Johnson and Martin have been privately engaged for years. Johnson has spoken fondly of watching Martin perform, telling Bustle in March, “I love watching him. I could watch him every day. I don’t know how to explain it. I feel like, I don’t know… I’m watching my most favorite being do his most favorite thing.”

Their love story began in November 2017 when Johnson was spotted at a Coldplay concert, sparking romance rumors. By January 2018, the couple was seen holding hands at the launch of Stella McCartney’s collections, confirming their relationship. They even got matching infinity tattoos in September 2018. Johnson confirmed their relationship in an interview with Tatler, saying, “I’m not going to talk about it. But I am very happy.”

The couple has continued to support each other publicly. In November 2019, Martin supported Johnson at her 30th birthday party, and she returned the favor by attending the Saturday Night Live after-party when Coldplay performed. Johnson also directed Coldplay’s “Cry, Cry, Cry” music video, which tells the story of a couple working through life’s obstacles together.

In March 2021, a source confirmed that Johnson and Martin had moved into a modern Cape Cod-styled home in Malibu, California, for $12.5 million. They have been spotted enjoying vacations together, including a trip to Palma De Mallorca, Spain, in July 2021. During a Coldplay concert in October 2021, Martin dedicated the song “My Universe” to Johnson, calling her his universe.

Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson’s enduring friendship and Johnson’s relationship with Chris Martin highlight the strong personal connections that have formed through their professional lives. Despite the challenges and rumors, Dornan and Johnson have remained close, supporting each other both on and off the screen.
