Jessie J has been diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The 36-year-old pop star shared this news through a heartfelt Instagram post, revealing that she sought medical help after welcoming her first child, Sky, last year. This experience led her to confront many of her symptoms more openly.
In her post, Jessie wrote, “Hi. I was diagnosed with ADHD and OCD about three months ago. When I shared this with people, many responses were along the lines of, ‘Yeah, we already knew that’ (and I’m sure some of you are thinking that right now). Of course, I was somewhat aware, but having a baby brought these issues to the forefront, making it feel less burdensome and scary. However, there were moments when I felt unable to talk about it. Forget that. Here I am, discussing it.”
Jessie expressed that she has felt “a bit different” throughout her life, and this diagnosis has allowed her to rethink how she manages personal and professional challenges. She remarked on the strangeness of knowing she has always experienced life differently and finally receiving an explanation for it.
ADHD, she pointed out, has a broad spectrum, and it often feels like piecing together a mystery. Understanding how to cope with it, overcome it, and grow from it has been a journey for her. “Honestly, I feel it’s a superpower, as long as you view it from the right perspective and have supportive people around you who can navigate it with you. It has made me reevaluate my whole life—the way I have been, how I approach things, my relationships, my work, and my love. It has empowered me, and at times, overwhelmed me, all at once,” Jessie shared.
She also mentioned feeling grateful to share her diagnosis with strangers online, recognizing that many others face similar struggles. This positive outcome has encouraged her to embrace self-love. “It has made me want to love myself even more. I’m embracing my 11-year-old self, who would clean her sneakers with a toothbrush when stressed and has lived with a thousand lists to prevent feeling like life is falling apart. Here’s to getting to know myself more through life and loving myself until the end. Nothing in life defines us; it helps us grow into a healthier version of ourselves,” she concluded.
Jessie received support from fellow singer Becky Hill, who shared her own life-changing diagnosis from the previous year. Becky commented on Jessie’s post, “I was diagnosed last year, and I think I’m also suspected of being autistic. You should follow @adhd_love_; they’re amazing at making you feel incredibly normal and capable of loving and laughing in our neurodivergent ways.”
If you or someone you know is experiencing similar challenges, it can be helpful to seek support or connect with communities that understand these conditions.
