Jesuits in Catalonia report 145 cases of sexual abuse since 1948

The Jesuits of Catalonia have reported 145 cases of sexual abuse within their institutions since 1948. These abuses were committed by 29 clergy members and 15 laypersons. In an effort to break the silence surrounding these issues, Pau Vidal, the institution’s delegate and spokesperson in Catalonia, publicly acknowledged the names of 14 of the perpetrators during a press conference. These individuals are currently involved in either civil or canonical judicial proceedings.

During the press conference held on Thursday, the Jesuits presented findings from their year-long analysis of abuses that occurred in schools and other institutions under their care in Catalonia. This investigation was conducted in collaboration with the Roca Junyent law firm, as well as other professionals and external organizations.

Vidal stated, “Until now, we had not disclosed any names.” However, on this occasion, they decided to make the identities of 14 abusers public. Among them, Lluis Tor stands out with 25 accusations against him, while Francesc Peris has been accused 24 times.

This move is seen as a significant step towards transparency and accountability within the institution. The commitment to address past abuses indicates an ongoing effort to foster a safer environment for individuals involved with Jesuit organizations. More updates on this situation are expected to follow.
