John Stamos ‘wouldn’t be alive’ without his therapist’s help

John Stamos has candidly expressed that he “wouldn’t be alive” without the support of his high-profile therapist, Phil Stutz. The 60-year-old actor has faced several tough times in his life, including a struggle with alcohol. He was particularly heartbroken by the passing of his dear friend Bob Saget, who co-starred with him on the beloved sitcom ‘Full House.’ Saget sadly passed away at the age of 65 after an accidental head injury in January 2022.

To navigate these personal challenges, Stamos turned to Stutz, a well-known therapist who gained fame through a Netflix documentary featuring his famous client, Jonah Hill. Stamos shared this revelation with Page Six, stating, “I probably wouldn’t be here without him.” He disclosed that he has been receiving therapy from Stutz for nearly 20 years, crediting him with significant help in maintaining his sobriety.

In his memoir ‘If You Would Have Told Me,’ Stamos opened up about his struggles with alcohol and the consequences he faced after a DUI arrest in 2015. He sought treatment for substance abuse just a month following his arrest. Reflecting on his first meeting with Stutz, Stamos recalled, “He said to me, ‘You know, if you weren’t so stupid, you’d realize how well you’re doing.’ And I told him, ‘You’re right.'”

Stamos, who is a father to a seven-year-old son named Billy with his wife, actress Caitlin McHugh, plays a family therapist in the Hulu series ‘UnPrisoned.’ He expressed how much he values therapy, so much so that he encouraged his late co-star Bob Saget to seek it as well. When they first met, Stamos recounted how he told Saget, “You have to go to therapy if you want to be my friend,” leading Saget to Stutz as well.

The insights he gained from therapy have served as inspiration for Stamos’s role in the second season of ‘UnPrisoned.’ The show features Kerry Washington as a relationship therapist and single mother whose life changes dramatically when her father, played by Delroy Lindo, is released from prison and moves in with her and her teenage son.
