Johnny Depp has launched a new art collection inspired by his own life experiences.
The star of "Pirates of the Caribbean" explores themes such as fatherhood, love, relationships, and career in his latest series titled "Tarot." This limited collection features only 195 editions, comprising four pieces named "The Lovers," "The Empress," "The Emperor," and "Strength."
Regarding the collection, Depp shared, "I’ve always felt a tremendous curiosity about tarot… and the cards have great art."
"The Lovers" marks "the beginning of the story." It depicts a cinematic scene where a man holds a rose while protecting his partner from danger. On the other hand, "The Emperor," which portrays a 17th-century French monarch, draws inspiration from a work Depp created while filming "Jeanne du Barry" in Versailles. Depp mentioned, "It’s not actually there… It represents a kind of ignorant power. I certainly wouldn’t dare to put my own face as the emperor. Never. I made ‘The Emperor’ faceless because if you place the emperor next to the empress, whom do you trust? The empress."
"The Empress" pays tribute to Vanessa Paradis, the mother of Johnny’s two children, and is inspired by a painting he did that appeared on the cover of Paradis’s album "Divinidylle." Depp remarked, "I know who she is on the inside. She is magnificent. She is pragmatic. She is practical."
Reflecting on the weathered crown of "The Empress," he added, "It looks like a crown that has weathered storms. It shows a certain courage and strength of commitment… the crown has been through a lot, yet it still shines."
The fourth piece, "Strength," is inspired by a large painting Depp created while Vanessa was pregnant with their daughter Lily-Rose, who is now 25 years old. This artwork features an elephant alongside the question, "Why would you want to fight something that doesn’t want to fight with you?"
Explaining the significance of the elephant, he stated, "They don’t live with any kind of threat in their bones and protect their own until the bitter end."
Depp hopes collectors will form their own interpretations of the pieces, which can be appreciated individually or as a complete set. He added, "[They could] represent, in some way, my reading of what I’ve experienced, but also activate all the characters I’ve played throughout my life."
The artworks will be available for purchase starting this Thursday, exclusively at www.castlefineart.com and in their galleries across the UK.
