Julia Fox has walked away from a project involving what she described as an "A-list icon" due to alleged racism from a "white director."
The 34-year-old actress, known for her role in "Uncut Gems," shared her experience in a TikTok video, expressing her frustrations about the director’s repeated intolerance during discussions on diversity. She found the conversation to be outrageous.
Fox explained, "Okay, something crazy just happened… I’ve been involved in a project for five years. I’ve contributed creatively and emotionally; it felt like my baby. I even brought in a major A-list icon to perform alongside me, and everything was fine until this white director came along."
She went on to say that the unnamed director attempted to sideline her just a week into the project. When Fox emphasized the importance of diversity in the cast, the director responded dismissively. He questioned why diversity was necessary, suggesting that it was equally challenging for white people. He referred to casting decisions that prioritize diversity as treating Black actors like "puppets."
He also remarked that white individuals aren’t obligated to cast Black actors, citing the existence of plenty of projects featuring people of color and asserting that no one expressed outrage over the lack of white representation in those instances. "Turn on Netflix, look at any streaming service; it’s all Black projects. Go to India; all jobs feature Indian people. No one gets upset about a lack of diversity there," he said.
Julia retorted that white individuals have historically been considered the norm, to which the director responded, "What are you talking about?"
She described the director’s stance as aligning with ideologies that promote white supremacy, leading her to decide that she could no longer work with him. "You know what? I can’t work with you; I’m done," she stated.
Despite her strong feelings, Julia decided not to disclose the director’s identity, stating that she didn’t want to jeopardize the opportunities of the other professionals involved in the project.
