Junts disassociates its ‘no’ from the stability goals of tomorrow’s meeting

Deputy Josep Cruset from Junts has distanced his party’s opposition to budget stability and public debt targets from the upcoming meeting between Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and interim Generalitat President Pere Aragonès of ERC. The meeting aims to finalize an agreement for transferring the management of the Minimum Vital Income program to Catalonia.

Cruset emphasized that Junts’ decision is based on fundamental issues concerning the daily work of its seven deputies and their commitment to the welfare of Catalonia. He stated that their position is not influenced by any last-minute developments from the meeting. This comment came in response to whether the discussions between Sánchez and Aragonès played a role in Junts’ rejection of the budget stability objectives, which are crucial for preparing the 2025 budget.

In addition to opposing the budget stability targets, Junts plans to vote against the consideration of the proposed reform to the Immigration Law. This action aligns them with Vox and PP in potentially bringing down the reform. With these events unfolding, questions have arisen about whether the legislature is experiencing a crisis.

Cruset rejected the idea of a legislative crisis, asserting that Junts has maintained its consistent approach. He stressed that the party will not offer its support without a clear return. “Junts’ favorable vote is always contingent on issues that benefit the citizens of Catalonia,” he stated, highlighting that neither the proposed expense ceiling from the Executive nor the Immigration Law reform fulfills this requirement.
