Kamala Harris pledged on Monday to make the fight for abortion rights a central focus of her presidential campaign against Republican Donald Trump. In her first electoral speech since President Joe Biden stepped back from running for re-election, she stated, “We will fight for reproductive freedom, knowing that if Trump gets the chance, he will sign a nationwide abortion ban.”
In 2022, the United States saw a significant shift in abortion legislation after nearly 50 years. This change came with a historic ruling known as “Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization,” which determined that abortion rights are not guaranteed by the Constitution. Consequently, each state gained the authority to enact its own laws either restricting or prohibiting abortion. Since Biden, being Catholic, has shown contradictions on this issue, Harris has taken the lead for the Democratic Party in this battle.
Throughout her Senate career, Harris has consistently supported a woman’s right to choose. In March, she made headlines for what is believed to be the first official visit by a sitting president or vice president to an abortion clinic, as reported by The New York Times. Conversely, Trump hailed the 2022 ruling as “the greatest victory for life in a generation,” attributing the decision to his appointment of three of the six judges involved. He asserted that a federal ban was unnecessary, claiming it was a matter of state rights.
On Monday, Harris also drew sharp comparisons between Trump and “predators” and “con artists.” She reminded her campaign team that during her time as California’s Attorney General, she had faced a range of offenders: “Predators who abused women, swindlers who cheated consumers, crooks who broke the rules for personal gain.” She added, “Believe me when I say I know what kind of person Donald Trump is.”
Harris kicked off her electoral campaign on Monday, vowing to win in November despite the tumultuous events surrounding Biden’s unexpected withdrawal. The 81-year-old president made his first public remarks in nearly a week while recovering from a COVID-19 infection. He called the meeting to announce that stepping aside was the right decision, praising Harris as “the best.”
“We are going to win in November,” Harris confidently assured her campaign staff during an impassioned speech at their Wilmington, Delaware headquarters. She emphasized that she wanted to address them personally after the past few “roller coaster” days. Additionally, she confirmed through her assistant that she will meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu this week during her visit to Washington, in a separately scheduled meeting from her talks with Biden.
